Washington Mystics Stun 2026 WNBA Draft, Snag Texas Star Rori Harmon in First Round
• Hot Trendy News
Rori Harmon’s pro dream is now reality. The 5-foot-6 floor general heard her name at No. 34 overall in Monday night’s 2026 WNBA Draft, landing with the Washington Mystics and becoming the 23rd Texas Longhorn to join the league — and the eighth point guard taken this year.
The Mystics gain a guard whose résumé already borders on historic. Harmon graduated as Texas’ career leader in assists and steals while piling up 1,616 points, 977 assists, 659 rebounds and 388 steals; she is the only Division I player ever to eclipse 1,600-950-650-350 in those categories. Add a Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year plaque, five NCAA tournament trips and back-to-back Final Fours, and it’s clear why head coach Vic Schaefer called her “irreplaceable.”
Harmon’s path was anything but smooth. A torn right ACL in December 2023 cost her an entire season and threatened her trademark explosiveness. Eighteen months of rehab later she returned sharper, guiding the Longhorns to consecutive No. 1 seeds and erasing 40-year program records in the process. Even a swollen finger suffered in this year’s Sweet 16 couldn’t slow her; Harmon still flirted with a triple-double against Kentucky before powering Texas to the Final Four.
For Washington, the fit checks every box. The Mystics finished last season bottom-three in assist percentage and fast-break points; Harmon excels at pushing tempo, threading pocket passes and picking pockets on the other end. Her 2.8-to-1 career assist-to-turnover ratio mirrors the pro game’s demand for efficiency, while her 94-foot defensive mindset will complement veteran stopper Brittney Sykes.
Off the court, Harmon’s Houston roots strengthen the WNBA’s foothold in Texas just as the league eyes expansion markets. Social media engagement around her draft moment trended nationwide within minutes, an early indicator that the Mystics may have snagged more than a backup guard — they may have found their next community ambassador.
What’s next? Washington opens training camp on April 25, where Harmon will battle for rotation minutes behind starter Julie Vanloo. If her college career is any guide, betting against “The Menace” is unwise. Expect her trademark stare-down defense and lightning-quick first step to translate quickly, energizing a Mystics roster intent on returning to playoff contention in 2026.
