Shohei Ohtani’s 2026 Two-Way Masterclass: Stats, Records & MLB Reactions
• Hot Trendy News
LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani’s bat is rewriting the early-season record book, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are riding the two-way superstar’s historic tear.
One day after greeting Jacob deGrom with a first-pitch, opposite-field laser into the right-field pavilion, Ohtani opened Sunday’s series finale with another leadoff blast, becoming the first Dodger ever to homer on the first pitch in back-to-back games. The pair of no-doubt shots pushed his season total to five and set the tone for another statement weekend at Chavez Ravine.
The power surge is only part of the story. Sunday’s 2-for-4 performance stretched Ohtani’s on-base streak to 46 games, the longest active run in Major League Baseball and the second-longest by a Dodger since 1950. During the streak, he is slashing .349/.446/.550 with more walks than strikeouts, reminding voters why he opened 2026 as the consensus MVP favorite.
Manager Dave Roberts credited a streamlined leg kick and an offseason emphasis on plate coverage for Ohtani’s torrid start. “He’s on time for everything right now,” Roberts said. “When Shohei’s rhythm is right, pitchers basically have to be perfect.”
Opposing managers agree. Mets skipper Carlos Mendoza called the 29-year-old “the most dangerous leadoff hitter we’ve faced in a decade,” noting that deGrom’s 100-mph heater on Saturday was two inches above the zone and still left the yard.
Beyond the highlight swings, Ohtani’s plate discipline is crushing scouting reports. Entering Monday, he leads the National League in pitches per plate appearance (4.38) and chase rate (19.4 %). Add that selectivity to double-digit sprint speeds and the Dodgers’ revamped top of the order suddenly looks like a cheat code.
Los Angeles is cashing in. The club owns MLB’s best record (12-3) and ranks first in runs scored despite middling production from the middle third of the lineup. “Shohei’s traffic-creating ability is letting everyone breathe,” Freddie Freeman said. “We’re never in a rush because we know the guy ahead of us is on base.”
The numbers back it up: Ohtani has scored or driven in 33 % of the Dodgers’ runs, while his 1.9 fWAR already tops the National League leaderboard.
Meanwhile, the right-hander’s return to the mound remains on schedule for mid-May after last season’s elbow cleanup. Ohtani threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Friday, touching 95 mph and flashing a sharper splitter, according to team trainers. If the arm rounds into form, Los Angeles could enter June with an MVP-caliber leadoff hitter and a Cy Young-level No. 2 starter in the same roster spot.
For now, the Dodgers will happily settle for daily fireworks. With a date against the division-rival Padres looming, Ohtani has a chance to become the first player in franchise history to homer in four consecutive games out of the leadoff slot. Given his current pace, betting against him feels reckless.
