Legendary Lakers Champion Coach Paul Westhead Wins 2026 Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award
• Hot Trendy News
Veteran coach Paul Westhead has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Basketball Coaches Association’s highest individual honor. The NBCA praised Westhead’s “relentless commitment to uptempo innovation and championship-level leadership” in Friday’s announcement, adding him to a roll that includes legends such as Lenny Wilkens and Jerry Sloan.
Westhead, 87, is best known for engineering the Los Angeles Lakers’ “Showtime” breakthrough during the 1980 NBA Finals, when an injured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar forced a rookie Magic Johnson to start at center, prompting a historic 42-point triple-double that clinched the franchise’s first title of the decade. Though his Laker tenure ended abruptly in 1981, the Philadelphia native reinvented himself at Loyola Marymount University, unleashing a record-setting run-and-gun system that averaged more than 122 points per game and captivated college basketball.
The NBCA cited that offensive revolution—later nicknamed “The System”—as a core reason for honoring Westhead, noting its influence on today’s pace-and-space era. Phoenix Suns coach Mike Budenholzer highlighted the milestone, saying, “When you watch teams sprint into threes and push 130-point nights, you’re watching Paul Westhead’s fingerprints.”
Westhead’s résumé spans every major branch of the sport: an NBA title with L.A., a WNBA championship with the Phoenix Mercury in 2007, and an NCAA women’s crown as an Oregon Ducks assistant in 2013. He is the only bench boss to win championships in both the NBA and WNBA, a feat the NBCA called “the ultimate testament to versatile coaching genius.”
In a statement, Westhead thanked former players—including Magic Johnson, Bo Kimble, and Diana Taurasi—for “turning risk into reward” inside his whirlwind playbook. “I always believed basketball should feel like poetry in fast forward,” he wrote. “Seeing today’s game mirror that vision is the greatest trophy of all.”
The lifetime award will be formally presented during NBA Summer League in Las Vegas next month, where Westhead is expected to address the league’s incoming rookie class. According to NBCA president Rick Carlisle, the ceremony will also feature video tributes from Johnson, Pat Riley, and former LMU star Hank Gathers’ family.
Search interest in Westhead has surged since the announcement, and memorabilia from his LMU tenure—especially vintage “Paulball” T-shirts—are already spiking on online auction sites. With the NBCA spotlight rekindling a fast-break legacy that reshaped modern offense, Paul Westhead is once again setting the pace—proof that, even four decades on, speed still kills and innovation never ages.
