Why Deaf Actress Kaylee Hottle Is the Breakout Star of Godzilla x Kong
• Hot Trendy News
Kaylee Hottle, the deaf actress who stole audiences’ hearts as Jia in the blockbuster films “Godzilla vs Kong” (2021) and its 2024 sequel “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” has died at 18 following a car accident in Maryland, her father Joshua Hottle confirmed in an emotional Facebook livestream and to entertainment outlet TMZ.
According to reports, the collision occurred late Monday night; emergency responders rushed the young performer to a nearby hospital, where she went into cardiac arrest en route. Joshua, who was in Texas at the time, told viewers he learned of the crash in a call from Maryland authorities and is now traveling to claim his daughter’s body.
Born in Atlanta in 2007 to a four-generation deaf family, Hottle first appeared in commercials for Glide and Convo, apps popular within the Deaf community, before renowned casting director Sarah Halley Finn tapped her for Legendary’s MonsterVerse. On-set, she communicated with co-stars Alexander Skarsgård and Rebecca Hall entirely in American Sign Language, earning praise for expanding authentic Deaf representation on screen.
Hottle balanced acting with her studies at Texas School for the Deaf, telling Chron in 2024 that the campus allowed her to “see more growth and positivity” for Deaf creatives. Industry colleagues echoed that sentiment Tuesday. “She showed the world what Deaf talent looks like,” tweeted Hall, calling her former scene partner “a luminous soul whose impact was massive despite her young age.”
Disability-rights advocates also highlighted Hottle’s legacy. “Kaylee proved that access and inclusion sell tickets,” said Howard Rosenblum of the National Association of the Deaf, urging studios to continue casting Deaf actors in mainstream franchises. Social-media tributes poured in from Godzilla fans who celebrated Jia’s serene bond with the giant ape—an on-screen relationship credited almost entirely to Hottle’s naturalistic signing.
While investigators continue to piece together the circumstances of the Maryland crash, friends have launched the #JusticeForKaylee campaign, asking transportation officials to review local road safety measures. A public memorial service is being planned in Austin, where she attended school, with an additional vigil expected in Atlanta.
Hottle is survived by her parents, three siblings and an extended Deaf family that spans four generations. As Hollywood mourns, many note that the silence she once navigated on set now echoes across an industry still catching up to the standard she set for representation and authenticity.
