Kevin Fiala Ignites LA Kings: 3-Point Night Sparks Playoff Push

Kevin Fiala injury sends shockwaves through 2026 Olympic men’s hockey
Swiss star and Los Angeles Kings winger Kevin Fiala was stretchered off the ice late in Switzerland’s 5-1 loss to Canada at the Milano Cortina Winter Games on Friday after an awkward collision with Canadian forward Tom Wilson.
The incident occurred with 2:50 remaining in regulation when Wilson drove Fiala into the left-wing boards in the Swiss zone and then fell across the 29-year-old’s left leg. Fiala immediately waved for medical help and lay motionless below the waist before being immobilized and taken off on a stretcher to a local Milan hospital for evaluation. No penalty was assessed on the play.
Switzerland opened Group A play with a 4-0 win over France on Thursday, a game in which Fiala logged an assist. Through two outings in Milan he averaged more than 20 minutes a night, anchoring a top line expected to carry Swiss medal hopes. Friday’s injury leaves head coach Patrick Fischer scrambling for answers ahead of Sunday’s pivotal group finale against Czechia, with a quarter-final berth on the line.
For the Kings, concern is equally high. Fiala is in the first season of a seven-year, $55 million extension signed in 2025 and had posted 40 points (18 g, 22 a) in 56 NHL games before the Olympic break. The 2023 All-Star owns 528 NHL points across stints with Los Angeles, Minnesota and Nashville and has been a fixture for Switzerland, helping the national team claim back-to-back silver medals at the 2024 and 2025 IIHF World Championships.
Neither the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation nor the Kings offered an immediate update beyond confirming Fiala would undergo imaging on his left leg. A timetable for return is expected once results are available, but early indications suggest the forward could miss the remainder of the Olympic tournament and potentially significant NHL time.
Canada’s victory, keyed by two goals from Connor McDavid, vaulted the Canadians to 2-0-0 and top spot in Group A. Switzerland sits at 1-1-0; a regulation win over Czechia would still guarantee advancement, but replacing Fiala’s elite transition game and power-play creativity presents a daunting challenge.
