Chris Sale Dominates for Braves: Is a Cy Young Comeback in the Making?
• Hot Trendy News
ATLANTA — Left-hander Chris Sale continues to look like the ace Atlanta envisioned when they acquired him ahead of the 2024 season, and tonight he’ll try to finish off a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs at Truist Park. The 37-year-old is coming off six scoreless innings in his last outing and now owns a 2.18 ERA with 68 strikeouts against just nine walks through his first eight starts of 2026, numbers that have him squarely in the early NL Cy Young conversation.
Manager Brian Snitker said Sale’s ability to pound the zone has set the tone for a Braves rotation that leads the league in strikeout-to-walk ratio. Sale threw 65 percent of his pitches for strikes in his previous start and leaned heavily on a fastball that still touches 95 mph, pairing it with his trademark wipeout slider to generate 15 swinging strikes. That dominance was on display again Wednesday, when he froze Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki on an 86 mph back-foot slider to end the third inning, drawing a roar from the sell-out crowd.
Atlanta’s offense has supplied plenty of support, plating 19 runs in the first two games of the series, but Sale noted the importance of finishing the job. “You don’t win divisions in May, but you can sure set yourself up,” he said Thursday afternoon. “Sweeps matter when you’re chasing October.”
If Sale keeps dealing, history suggests the Cubs could be in for another long night. Over his last two starts against Chicago, the seven-time All-Star has fanned 23 while allowing just one run across 13 innings. His resurgence is a welcome sight after an injury-marred stint in Boston earlier in the decade; he logged 196 innings in 2024 and has not missed a turn since.
Beyond the box score, Sale’s presence has galvanized a Braves clubhouse that already features perennial MVP candidate Ronald Acuña Jr. Catcher Sean Murphy praised Sale’s meticulous preparation: “He’s got a game plan for every hitter, and he communicates it so well that we’re never guessing.”
With the Mets idle, a win would push Atlanta three games clear atop the NL East and mark the club’s fourth sweep in its last five series. First pitch is set for 7:20 p.m. ET, and tickets remain available through BravesVision streams for out-of-market viewers.
