Justin Crawford's Electric MLB Debut: Phillies Rookie Racks Up 2 Hits and a Show-Stopping Leaping Catch
• Hot Trendy News
Philadelphia — Phillies fans didn’t have to wait long to see why the front office fast-tracked 20-year-old Justin Crawford to the big-league roster. Batting eighth and patrolling center field on Opening Day, the club’s No. 3 prospect went 2-for-4, legging out a pair of opposite-field singles and flashing elite 29-ft./sec. sprint speed that turned routine base hits into instant scoring threats.
Manager Rob Thomson praised Crawford’s poise: “He plays the game at one speed—fast—but the moment never looked too big.” That assessment mirrors pre-season scouting reports that predicted the 2022 first-round pick would give Philadelphia its first true top-of-the-order burner since Jimmy Rollins. In three minor-league seasons Crawford slashed .312/.365/.417 with 135 stolen bases, a profile president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said “forced our hand” when Brandon Marsh’s knee flared up late in camp.
Speed is only half the story. Crawford’s quick left-handed bat produced a .250 average and .637 OPS in Grapefruit League action, but club insiders were more impressed by his 18 percent strikeout rate and emerging gap power—attributes the coaching staff believes will grow as he fills out his 6-3 frame. Defensively, his closing burst allowed him to rob Wyatt Langford of extra bases with a leaping grab at the track during the final exhibition, an early candidate for the season’s highlight reel.
Genetics suggest the upside is real: Justin is the son of four-time All-Star Carl Crawford and a second cousin of Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford. Yet he downplays the lineage. “My dad’s path was his. I’m writing my own chapter,” he said, moments after handing his first hit ball to his mother in the stands.
If the rookie continues to get on base, the top of Philadelphia’s order could soon read Turner-Schwarber-Crawford, creating nightly headaches for opposing batteries. With a fanbase already chanting “Jus-tin, Jus-tin” after each sprint up the line, the city may have found its next home-grown sparkplug just in time for a pennant push.
