Jessie Diggins Shatters U.S. Cross-Country Record With Historic World Cup Victory
• Hot Trendy News
Jessie Diggins, the most decorated American in cross-country skiing history, will clip into her skis Friday for the women’s 10 km freestyle interval start at the Milan–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, seeking the individual gold that has eluded her in three previous Games.
The 32-year-old from Afton, Minnesota enters the race nursing rib and shoulder injuries sustained during a training crash in late January, yet she refused to withdraw, calling the event her “second-best shot” at gold this week after Tuesday’s sprint, where she was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Diggins already logged an eighth-place finish in the skiathlon, clawing back after an early fall that left her poles tangled and her lenses iced over in heavy snowfall.
Despite the bruises, momentum is on the American’s side. She captured her third overall World Cup crystal globe last March, then opened this season with five podiums in seven starts, showing the climbing form and finishing kick that powered her historic team-sprint gold with Kikkan Randall in 2018 and an individual silver and bronze in Beijing 2022.
Diggins has framed Milan–Cortina as a farewell tour. “I just want to enjoy it and be fully present,” she told Powder Magazine after the Opening Ceremony, hinting that she may retire at season’s end to focus on environmental advocacy and eating-disorder awareness. That perspective, her coaches say, has lightened the pressure while sharpening her trademark closing sprint.
Course officials expect soft, transformed snow on the undulating Lago di Tesero track, conditions that favor Diggins’ high-tempo V2 technique and aerobic engine. Norway’s Helene Marie Fossesholm and Sweden’s Frida Karlsson, both classic specialists, are skipping the 10 km to concentrate on Saturday’s relay, leaving reigning world champion Ebba Andersson of Sweden as Diggins’ primary rival for gold. A victory would make the American the first non-European woman to win an Olympic distance race in the sport’s 102-year history.
U.S. head coach Matt Whitcomb confirmed that Diggins’ skis will run a mid-range fluoro-free wax designed for 0 °C, the same setup that tested fastest in Wednesday night’s glide session. “If Jessie nails her pacing, she has the fitness to negative-split the field,” Whitcomb said. The staff will radio split times every 2.5 km; Diggins plans to open conservatively before attacking the final climb known as Cermis Lite, a shortened replica of the Tour de Ski finale where she earned a landmark stage win in 2021.
NBC will air the race live at 4 a.m. ET with a replay in prime time, and U.S. Ski & Snowboard is encouraging fans to join a nationwide #DigginsWatch party on social media. Win or lose, Friday’s start promises another chapter in a career that has already shifted the gravity of American cross-country skiing—and may yet rewrite Olympic history once more.
