Bengals DT D.J. Reader Shocks NFL with Surprise Free-Agency Move—Everything You Need to Know Today
• Hot Trendy News
The New York Giants have moved quickly to plug the middle of their defensive line, reaching agreement on a two-year, $12.5 million contract with veteran defensive tackle D.J. Reader, according to multiple reports. Incentives could push the value higher, rewarding Reader if he regains the disruptive form that once made him one of the league’s premier run stuffers.
Reader, 31, arrives in East Rutherford after a steady 2025 campaign with the Detroit Lions in which he logged 28 tackles across all 17 games, showing he is fully recovered from the quad injury that limited his 2023 season. Before that stint, the 6-foot-3, 335-pound nose tackle spent four years anchoring the Cincinnati Bengals’ front and four seasons with the Houston Texans, the franchise that drafted him in the fifth round back in 2016.
Why the Giants needed him
• Dexter Lawrence’s free-agency departure left a 340-pound vacancy at the heart of New York’s defense. Reader’s size, gap discipline and double-team-eating power make him the closest one-for-one replacement available on the open market.
• New defensive coordinator Shane Bowen* builds his scheme from the inside out, demanding a space-eating 1-tech to free up edge rushers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Brian Burns. Reader excels at collapsing pockets on early downs, forcing offenses into obvious passing situations.
• The Giants surrendered 4.8 yards per carry over the final six weeks of last season; plugging that leak was a front-office priority.
Contract context
Reader commanded $53 million from Cincinnati in 2020 and $22 million from Detroit in 2023. Landing him for an average of $6.25 million per year reflects both a soft interior-line market and teams’ medical concerns about a player entering his age-32 season. For the Giants, though, the structure offers low risk with high upside: only $8 million is believed to be guaranteed, and performance bonuses are tied to snap counts and playoff milestones.
What’s next for the roster
New York now boasts a four-man interior rotation of Reader, Shelby Harris, Leki Fotu and third-round rookie T’Vondre Sweat*. Expect Harris to handle most sub-package snaps while Reader focuses on first and second downs. The move also allows fifth-year veteran Rakeem Nunez-Roches to shift into a situational role, keeping the veteran fresher for December football.
Reader’s market and why he chose Big Blue
The Giants weren’t the only suitor. The Patriots evaluated Reader as a potential solution for their own post-draft depth issues before pivoting elsewhere. Ultimately, New York’s willingness to meet Reader’s salary floor—and the promise of a starting role—won out over interest from cap-strapped contenders.
Outlook for 2026
If Reader delivers the 35-snap, run-wall presence the Giants envision, the deal will be remembered as one of the smarter mid-spring pickups of the 2026 offseason. Should he flash the pass-rush juice he showcased in Cincinnati’s 2021 playoff run, general manager Joe Schoen’s patience will look even better. Either way, Big Blue’s biggest hole just became considerably smaller.
