Xabi Alonso Poised for Sensational Liverpool Return – Inside the Talks Set to Transform Anfield

Xabi Alonso’s phone is ringing once again. After steering Bayer Leverkusen through an historic unbeaten domestic double in 2023-24, the 44-year-old Spaniard is now the front-runner in two of the Premier League’s highest-profile succession plans. Sources close to the situation say Chelsea have already opened exploratory talks with Alonso’s camp about replacing Mauricio Pochettino this summer. The Athletic reports that co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali are “hugely impressed” by Alonso’s high-pressing 3-2-2-3 system and his track record of fast-tracking young talent, two boxes the London club want ticked as they reboot yet again. Liverpool, meanwhile, have not given up hope of luring their 2005 Champions League hero back to Anfield. Jurgen Klopp’s successor Arne Slot has endured a turbulent first campaign and FSG have made discreet enquiries about Alonso’s willingness to return to Merseyside should they make another change in the dug-out. Alonso’s stock has never been higher. In Germany he transformed Leverkusen from mid-table also-rans into record-breakers, racking up 91 league points, a +68 goal difference and the longest unbeaten streak in Bundesliga history. His dynamic midfield rotations, inverted full-backs and emphasis on rapid rest-defence have become a tactical reference point across Europe, drawing comparisons with the early coaching years of Pep Guardiola. Yet prising him away from the BayArena will not be straightforward. Leverkusen’s hierarchy inserted a €15 million release clause into the contract extension Alonso signed last September, and sporting director Simon Rolfes insists the club “fully expects Xabi to lead us into the Champions League again next season.” Still, sources in Spain claim Alonso views the Premier League as the logical next step and is intrigued by Chelsea’s transfer budget and Liverpool’s emotional pull. For Chelsea, the timing looks ideal. Pochettino’s side could finish outside the European places for a second consecutive year, and senior players privately fear yet another summer of upheaval. By moving early, the Blues hope to beat Liverpool – and potentially Bayern Munich, who have monitored Alonso since Thomas Tuchel’s departure – to the signature of one of Europe’s hottest coaches. Alonso is expected to make a final decision after Leverkusen’s post-season tour in early June. Until then, the Premier League’s managerial carousel is effectively on pause, with two of its biggest clubs waiting for the Basque tactician to choose blue, red – or another year of black and red in the Rhineland.
