WV School Closings & Delays Today: Full List Updated Hourly (Jan 20 2026)

Updated Tuesday, January 20, 2026 — 7:00 a.m. EST
A fresh round of snow and ice overnight has led to widespread WV school closings and delays this morning, with road crews in many counties struggling to keep secondary roads clear. The West Virginia Department of Education’s official portal shows more than a dozen full county shutdowns and dozens more operating on two-hour delays as of 6:53 a.m.
County-by-county snapshot
• Closed for the day: Doddridge, Hardy, Marshall, Mineral, Tyler, Wetzel and others are among the districts calling off all in-person classes.
• Two-hour delays: Boone, Brooke, Gilmer, Greenbrier, Jackson, Lincoln, Nicholas and Webster counties have opted for late starts while highway crews treat slick spots.
• Partial closures: Wayne County reports only “some” schools closed due to isolated icy hollows.
Why the sudden spike in cancellations?
An Alberta clipper raced across the state before dawn, dropping 2–5 inches of powder in the higher ridges and glazing lower elevations with freezing drizzle. Temperatures remain in the teens in the northern panhandle and low 20s along the Kanawha Valley, preventing salt from working quickly. The West Virginia Division of Highways warns black ice is likely on shaded secondary roads until late morning.
What parents need to know
1. Check again before leaving: Counties update statuses every 15–30 minutes. Refresh the WVDE closures page or sign up for text alerts to avoid an unnecessary trip.
2. Virtual or NTI days: Many districts now pivot to nontraditional instruction when buildings close. Log in to your child’s Schoology, Canvas or Google Classroom for assignments.
3. Meal pickups: Hardy and Mineral counties have announced curb-side meal distribution at central kitchens between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Families should remain in vehicles.
4. Athletics and after-school: All extracurricular events are automatically canceled in fully closed counties. Delayed counties will decide by noon; check coach or band director messages.
Road outlook
Interstate 79 remains mostly wet, but Route 50 over Chestnut Ridge and U.S. 33 through Dry Fork report snow-covered lanes. If you must travel, leave extra stopping distance and pack an emergency blanket. The National Weather Service expects flurries to taper by midday, but refreezing is likely after sunset.
Looking ahead
Forecast models hint at another clipper Friday night that could add light accumulations south of Charleston. School officials will monitor conditions and announce any additional WV school closings by 5 a.m. each morning.
