Vietnam’s tourism sector is roaring into 2026 with record-breaking numbers and bold new targets, positioning the country as one of Asia’s must-visit destinations for the Year of the Horse. According to the Việt Nam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT), the four-day New Year break (1–4 January) drew an estimated 3.5 million domestic and international visitors, generating nearly ₫14 trillion (≈US $570 million) in revenue—an all-time high for the holiday period. Building on this momentum, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has set an ambitious goal of welcoming 25 million foreign arrivals and 150 million domestic trips in 2026, eyeing total tourism receipts of roughly ₫1.125 quadrillion (US $45 billion). Officials credit expanded visa-free entry for 13 key markets, new e-visa options for 200+ nationalities, and a ramp-up in international flight capacity from carriers such as Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet and Bamboo Airways. Demand is also surging ahead of Tết (Lunar New Year), which begins on 17 February. Agoda reports that searches for Vietnam travel during the week-long holiday have spiked 34 percent year-on-year, with Hà Nội, Đà Nẵng and Phú Quốc topping domestic wish lists while South Koreans, Australians and Indians lead inbound interest. To capture that influx, hoteliers are rolling out early-bird discounts, and heritage sites such as Hội An Ancient Town will extend opening hours for night-time walking-street experiences. International press coverage is amplifying Vietnam’s appeal. Vogue recently named the country one of its “12 Standout Destinations for 2026,” citing pristine beaches, vibrant food culture and a favorable exchange rate. Industry analysts say the endorsement could drive a wave of long-haul travelers seeking alternatives to overcrowded regional hotspots. Infrastructure upgrades are keeping pace. The first phase of Long Thành International Airport outside Hồ Chí Minh City is on schedule for late-2026 handover, promising to add 25 million passenger slots annually. Northern Việt Nam is expanding expressways linking Hà Nội to mountainous cultural hubs like Sa Pa and Hà Giang, trimming travel times by up to two hours. Coastal provinces meanwhile are fast-tracking cruise terminals to meet growing demand for Mekong and Gulf of Tonkin itineraries. Sustainability remains a focal point. VNAT’s Green Travel roadmap incentivizes hotels to cut single-use plastics and adopt solar power, while community-based tourism projects in the Central Highlands aim to channel visitor spending directly to ethnic minority villages. The government is also piloting a digital nomad visa, hoping to capitalize on remote-worker trends and lengthen average stays beyond the current 7.9 days. “With arrivals already exceeding pre-pandemic peaks and global interest climbing, Vietnam is entering a golden window to reposition itself from an emerging destination to a mature tourism powerhouse,” said Nguyễn Trùng Khánh, VNAT’s director general, at a press briefing on Tuesday. If the sector hits its 2026 targets, tourism could contribute more than 12 percent to national GDP—up from 9.2 percent last year—cementing Vietnam’s spot on every traveler’s Southeast Asia itinerary.
