USS Gerald R. Ford Set for Historic 11-Month Deployment: Inside the Navy’s Longest Carrier Mission
• Hot Trendy News
The USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest and most advanced aircraft carrier, is on the cusp of smashing a post-Vietnam record for the longest continuous carrier deployment, poised to reach 11 months at sea this week.
Commissioned in 2017, the $13 billion super-carrier departed Naval Station Norfolk last June and has since pin-balled across three combatant commands, underscoring how heavily the US Navy now leans on the Ford-class platform for global power projection. After an initial patrol in the high north, the ship sprinted to the Caribbean to support the January raid that captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, then raced back across the Atlantic to launch sorties during the Iran conflict—logging hundreds of catapult launches despite a 30-hour laundry-compartment fire in March that displaced 600 sailors but caused no serious injuries.
That relentless tempo is testing both metal and morale. Navy studies show retention problems spike once a deployment crosses the six-month mark, and families of the 4,500-member crew describe “constant uncertainty” as the ship’s return window repeatedly moved from February to May. To blunt burnout, the Ford embarked Sage, a Labrador retriever with the rank of “captain,” trained to detect anxiety and encourage sailors to seek help—part of an experimental mental-health initiative now drawing service-wide interest.
Strategists say the record cruise highlights a broader problem: the Navy’s premier assets are being stretched thin by simultaneous crises in Europe, the Middle East, the Caribbean and the Indo-Pacific. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle is already crafting “enduring packages” of smaller ships for future counternarcotics work so that carriers like the Ford can focus on high-end deterrence missions against China and Russia.
Yet for now, the Ford remains indispensable. Its electromagnetic launch system can fling everything from MQ-25 drones to F/A-18E/F Super Hornets faster than legacy steam catapults, giving commanders unmatched flexibility when striking targets or flying combat air patrols. During Operation Epic Fury over Iran, those capabilities proved crucial as the White House shifted from standoff missiles to manned bombing runs deep inside contested airspace.
Maintenance crews report arresting wires fraying and waste-processing systems clogging—reminders that even a next-generation flattop accrues wear when kept on station for nearly a year. But naval analyst Brent Sadler argues the deployment also validates the class: without the Ford’s larger deck and advanced sensors, the United States “would be struggling to keep carriers ahead of our enemies”.
With hostilities cooling in the Gulf and Caribbean interdiction ops shifting to Coast Guard cutters, planners say the strike group could finally steam for home within weeks. When it does, sailors will pass a milestone etched into Navy lore—nearly 300 days under way—while service leaders wrestle with how to balance deterrence demands against crew endurance before the next crisis calls the USS Gerald R. Ford back to the fight.
