U of Arizona President to Resign Amid $177 Million Budget Crisis—What’s Next for Students, Tuition & Wildcats Sports?
• Hot Trendy News
TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Arizona campus is electric this week as the No. 2–seed Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball team heads to the Final Four for the first time since 2001. All 14,500 free tickets for Saturday’s official watch party inside McKale Center at Alkeme Arena vanished in less than 12 hours, underscoring the red-and-blue frenzy that has swept Tucson.
Arizona Athletics will open McKale’s doors at 4:30 p.m. ahead of the 5:54 p.m. tip-off against Big Ten champion Michigan. Fans lucky enough to score seats will see the national broadcast on the center-hung video board, with the Pride of Arizona pep band, Wilbur and Wilma Wildcat, and the spirit squads keeping energy high between breaks. Cherry Avenue Garage parking is $9 before 5 p.m. and $5 afterward, while surrounding surface lots are free but expected to fill quickly.
The Wildcats received a roaring send-off Wednesday morning as students lined University Boulevard to cheer head coach Tommy Lloyd and his squad boarding buses for the airport. Seniors KJ Lewis and Oumar Ballo waved UA flags from the motorcade, promising to “Bear Down for Tucson” in Indianapolis before disappearing behind police escorts.
Downtown businesses are seizing the moment. Restaurants along Congress Street have extended patio hours, while hotel occupancy citywide is nearing 100 percent, according to Visit Tucson. Retailers report brisk sales of 2026 Final Four merchandise, with the campus UArizona BookStore restocking commemorative T-shirts twice daily.
For those shut out of McKale, Arizona Athletics recommends the official overflow sites at Centennial Hall and Student Union Memorial Center, where the game will be shown on theater-sized screens. Fans outside Southern Arizona can join the “Wildcats Everywhere” virtual tailgate on the university’s alumni platform, streaming live player interviews and halftime analysis from former UA greats.
Saturday’s matchup pits the nation’s third-ranked offense against the Wolverines’ top-five defense, setting the stage for a classic Final Four showdown. A win would send Arizona to the national championship on Monday and ignite what could be the largest celebration on the Mall since the 1997 title run.
Whether cheering from McKale, a campus lawn chair, or halfway across the globe, Wildcat faithful are united by one refrain this April: Bear Down and believe.
