Flying This Summer? TSA’s New Rules and Fast-Track Screening Could Slash Your Airport Wait Times
• Hot Trendy News
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is gearing up for its busiest summer in history, and travelers who understand the newest screening tactics will clear checkpoints faster—often in under 10 minutes—while those who don’t risk missing flights.
Nationwide, TSA officers expect to screen more than 3 million passengers a day by late June, a 9 percent jump over last year’s record volumes. To keep lines moving, the agency has quietly expanded its next-generation Computed Tomography (CT) scanners to every major U.S. hub. CT lanes let officers rotate a 3-D image of your carry-on; you no longer need to remove electronics or 3-1-1 liquids at airports equipped with the technology.
That said, powders trigger more bag checks than any other item, a trend officials call “the summer powder surge.” If you plan to pack protein mix, baby formula or drink flavorings, place them in a clear zipper bag on top of other items. Powders over 12 oz still receive extra scrutiny—even in CT lanes—so separating them prevents time-consuming rescans.
Digital ID is another game-changer this season. Travelers with Apple Wallet or Google Wallet can now tap their phone or watch at 275 TSA PreCheck lanes—up from 164 last Memorial Day. The agency says 98 percent of passengers who present a mobile license spend under five minutes at the podium. Add that to the fact that 15 million Americans enrolled in PreCheck (an all-time high), and the short “green check” queue is poised to outpace the standard line for the first time since 2019.
But PreCheck benefits vanish if you overlook REAL ID. Beginning May 3, 2027, every traveler 18 and older must show a REAL ID-compliant license, a passport or a digital ID tied to a REAL ID. States such as California and New Jersey are mailing reminder cards now; expect airport signage that stresses “One Year Left” throughout the summer.
Staffing is finally at 100 percent, with 2,200 new officers graduating from the TSA Academy in Glynco, Georgia. That boost lets checkpoints open 30 minutes earlier at Atlanta, Denver and Orlando—three of last year’s worst chokepoints. While the agency predicts “minimal wait times,” it still recommends arriving two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures if you’re flying between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., when 43 percent of the day’s fliers converge.
Parents of young children will notice friendlier rules too. Children 17 and under may now accompany PreCheck-enrolled guardians through the dedicated lane without preregistration, and formula, breast milk and juice are exempt from the 3-1-1 liquid limit (declare them at the X-ray belt).
Finally, watch your packing list: replica weapons, even miniature key-chain versions, continue to cause hour-long shutdowns when spotted on the X-ray. The agency seized 6,542 firearms last year—88 percent loaded—and it shows no tolerance for “souvenir” knives, martial-arts stars or inert grenades.
Bottom line:
• Download or renew TSA PreCheck now; appointments are plentiful on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
• Add your digital ID to Apple or Google Wallet before you leave home.
• Keep powders and large electronics on top of your bag if you’re flying from a small regional airport that may not have CT scanners yet.
• Double-check that your driver’s license sports the REAL ID star, or pack your passport.
• Follow @TSA on X for real-time AskTSA support and checkpoint wait updates.
Master these tweaks and you’ll breeze through the nation’s busiest summer travel season just as quickly as TSA promises—and spend the extra time at your gate instead of in line.
