Tampa Bay Weather Alert: Severe Storms Could Disrupt Weekend Plans—Stay Updated
• Hot Trendy News
A fast-moving cold front is sweeping across the Gulf and will reach the Tampa Bay area late Saturday, bringing increasing clouds, gusty southwest winds up to 30 mph and a band of showers with isolated thunderstorms after sunset, mainly north of Pasco and Hernando counties. Behind the front, cooler and much drier air settles in Sunday: morning lows slip to the upper-50s bay side and mid-50s inland, while afternoon highs struggle past the upper-60s before rebounding to the mid-70s Monday.
Despite the overnight rain, the National Weather Service warns it will not dent the region’s widening rainfall deficit. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor upgrade now places nearly every coastal county from Citrus to Sarasota—including Hillsborough and Pinellas—in “severe drought,” conditions that have already fueled nine wildfires in 2026, all since New Year’s Day. Forestry officials urge residents to secure trailer chains, avoid roadside parking on dry grass and obey county burn bans to curb accidental ignitions.
Marine interests should note a Small Craft Advisory through early Sunday; seas build to 4-6 ft in the Gulf, and bay waters will be choppy with southwest winds ahead of the boundary, then turning northwest behind it. Beachgoers can expect a high-risk rip current setup Sunday as the offshore flow accelerates.
Looking ahead, a zonal pattern returns mid-week, allowing temperatures to climb back near 80 °F by Thursday. However, long-range guidance shows the storm track staying north, meaning meaningful rain may evade Tampa Bay for at least another week—bad news for parched lawns and rising wildfire danger. Outdoor water use restrictions could expand if the dry spell persists.
What residents should do now:
• Clear gutters, pine needles and dead brush within 30 ft of the home.
• Keep grills and fire pits covered; a single ember can travel yards in 15-mph winds.
• Marinas should double-check mooring lines ahead of tonight’s wind surge.
• Sign up for NWS weather alerts and local county text push notifications for burn-ban updates.
Stay with local meteorologists for real-time radar and lightning tracking tonight, and check NOAA weather radio before heading out on Sunday morning. As Tampa Bay weather swings from stormy to cool and breezy, preparedness remains the best defense against both slick roads and fast-spreading brush fires.
