Billionaire Donor Stephen Cloobeck Cuts Ties With Eric Swalwell in Shock Move Over Assault Allegations
• Hot Trendy News
Beverly Hills, CA—Billionaire timeshare mogul Stephen Cloobeck, once a marquee Democratic donor, has publicly severed all ties with Rep. Eric Swalwell after a heated confrontation inside Cloobeck’s Beverly Hills estate over a rape allegation the congressman denies.
Cloobeck told reporters he “busted the trust” he once had in Swalwell, escorting the Bay-Area lawmaker out of his home the moment the accusation surfaced. The split also ends years of six-figure campaign checks and joint political appearances that had made Cloobeck one of Swalwell’s most influential backers.
The fallout erupted days after a civil complaint was filed in Alameda County accusing Swalwell of sexual assault during his 2024 Senate bid. Swalwell has dismissed the claim as “categorically false,” but Cloobeck said the congressman’s response inside the mansion “felt rehearsed” and left him unconvinced. “I asked point-blank if there was any truth. He danced. That’s when I said, ‘Get out,’” Cloobeck recounted.
Cloobeck’s break is politically significant: the 64-year-old built Diamond Resorts International into a global hospitality brand before selling it for $2.2 billion in 2021. He has since funneled more than $25 million to Democratic causes, appeared on “Undercover Boss,” and briefly explored a 2018 run for California governor. His personal endorsement list has featured everyone from Barack Obama to local school-board hopefuls, giving him outsized sway among West-Coast fundraisers.
Sources close to the donor network say Cloobeck’s move is already triggering cancellations of upcoming Swalwell fund-raisers in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. “When Steve shuts the door, a lot of other doors slam with him,” said one veteran bundler who requested anonymity to preserve relationships.
Swalwell’s campaign, while maintaining innocence, now faces a cash crunch heading into a turbulent reelection year. Federal Election Commission filings show Cloobeck-linked entities accounted for roughly 18 percent of the congressman’s 2025–26 haul. “We’ll fight this attack the same way we always do—by telling the truth,” a campaign statement read, declining to address the donor exodus.
Beyond the Beltway drama, analysts say Cloobeck’s decision spotlights a wider rift between high-dollar Democratic financiers and officeholders grappling with misconduct claims. “These donors see brand risk the same way CEOs do,” said USC political scientist Ange-Marie Hancock Alfaro. “If a candidate can’t convincingly rebut allegations, the money evaporates.”
Cloobeck hinted he may redirect his wallet to down-ballot races and veterans’ charities: “My focus is integrity. If you don’t have it, you don’t get a dime.” He added that he is “no longer a Democrat,” echoing frustrations with party leadership over vetting standards—a declaration certain to spark fresh debate inside donor circles.
With legal motions scheduled for early May, the Swalwell case—and Cloobeck’s headline-grabbing departure—promise to dominate California’s political conversation through the summer. For now, the once-powerful alliance between the congressman and the billionaire philanthropist appears permanently broken, leaving both men to navigate fallout on separate, uncertain paths.
