Nationwide Spectrum Outage Leaves Thousands Offline—What’s Causing It and When Service Will Be Restored

Internet Down? What We Know About Today’s Spectrum Outage
Thousands of Charter Spectrum customers across the United States woke up Sunday to blinking modems and stalled video streams, as a fresh wave of outages swept the cable-giant’s network.
Where the disruption is hitting hardest
Real-time data from outage-tracking site DownDetector shows the sharpest spike in problem reports shortly after 6 a.m. ET, with hotspots clustered around Los Angeles, Dallas–Fort Worth, Charlotte, Tampa and parts of New York City. Customers report total internet loss, high packet-loss on gaming servers and the inability to authenticate TV-app log-ins.
What Spectrum is saying
On its official support account “Ask Spectrum,” the company acknowledged “intermittent connectivity issues impacting sections of the Southeast and Southwest” and said engineers are “rerouting traffic while repairs are underway”. No restoration timeline has been given, but the provider urged subscribers to keep equipment powered on for automatic reconnection.
Likely cause
Industry analysts point to a cascading routing failure triggered by overnight maintenance on a backbone provider that carries Charter traffic between Atlanta and Dallas. Similar third-party fiber cuts have disrupted Spectrum service before, including a hurricane-related hub failure that blacked out parts of the Carolinas and Virginia last fall.
How to check your address
1. Use the Spectrum App or log in to Spectrum.net; an orange banner appears if your ZIP code is in a confirmed outage.
2. Compare with crowd-sourced heat maps (DownDetector, Outage.Report) to see if neighbors are also down.
3. Reboot your modem/router only after verifying power is stable in your area—multiple reboots can delay re-provisioning.
Can you get a credit?
Spectrum’s customer-commitment policy states you’re entitled to a one-day service credit if an outage lasts more than two hours after being officially recorded. Call 1-855-707-7328 or use the chat feature once service is restored to request the adjustment.
Work-from-home alternatives
• Enable Wi-Fi calling over your mobile hotspot.
• Ask your employer about LTE/5G backup stipends; many hybrid-office policies include them now.
• Public libraries and coffee chains often open at 7 a.m. on Sundays and provide free high-speed Wi-Fi.
When will service come back?
Based on prior nationwide disruptions, backbone reroutes typically stabilize traffic within four to six hours, with localized repairs following throughout the day. Keep push notifications enabled on the Spectrum App for the first confirmation of restoration.
