Deadly Snow Squall Warning: Instant Whiteout Triggers Travel Chaos—What You Need to Know

Drivers across the Great Lakes are bracing for sudden, blinding bursts of snow as the National Weather Service issues multiple snow squall warnings this morning. The most urgent alerts cover Livingston, Oakland and Macomb counties in Southeast Michigan, where wind gusts up to 55 mph are expected to drop visibility to near-zero within minutes. Forecasters warn that these fast-moving bands could produce white-knuckle travel on I-94, I-75 and regional surface roads through the early afternoon. The Free Press reports that the same Arctic front fueling the snow squalls is also dragging wind chills below –10 °F, creating the risk of flash-freezing on untreated pavement. Across the border, Ontario officials temporarily shut down a stretch of Highway 402 west of London after near-whiteout snow squalls and 60 km/h gusts triggered a series of spin-outs and jack-knifed semis. Environment Canada says additional 15 cm bursts are possible before the squall line weakens late tonight. What is a snow squall? Unlike a traditional winter storm, a snow squall is a narrow, intense wall of wind-blown snow that can turn clear skies into blizzard-like conditions within 30 seconds. Meteorologists liken it to a summertime thunderstorm—brief but dangerous—often lasting less than an hour over any one location. Safety tips during a snow squall: • Delay travel if possible; conditions may improve sharply after the band passes. • If caught on the road, reduce speed immediately, turn on hazard lights and maintain extra distance. • Expect icy spots on exit ramps and bridges where flash-freeze can occur. • Keep an emergency kit—blanket, food, phone charger and flares—in your vehicle throughout the season. Airline passengers should prepare for delays at Detroit Metro and Toronto Pearson as ground crews pause ramp operations during peak squall intensity. Utility companies meanwhile are staging crews for scattered outages as gale-force winds threaten tree limbs already coated in ice. The NWS says additional snow squall warnings may be issued this evening as the Arctic boundary sweeps east toward Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Stay tuned to local alerts and be ready to pull over if the wall of white suddenly appears.
