Sharon Stone’s Ex-Husband Breaks Silence: Untold Stories Behind Their High-Profile Split
• Hot Trendy News
Sharon Stone is once again speaking openly about her turbulent split from newspaper icon Phil Bronstein, the “Basic Instinct” star’s ex-husband of six years. In a candid appearance on journalist David Begnaud’s new podcast “The Person Who Believed in Me,” Stone, 68, revisited the medical crises and legal drama that she says ended the marriage and cost her primary custody of their adopted son, Roan.
Accepting that she might be violating a long-standing confidentiality agreement, Stone recounted a 2001 health scare in which doctors recommended a double mastectomy after discovering large breast tumors shortly after her near-fatal brain aneurysm. According to Stone, Bronstein dismissed the recommended surgery as “ridiculous” and walked out of the room—“That was the end of the marriage,” she told Begnaud.
The Oscar-nominated actress also alleged that Bronstein, then executive editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, leveraged his local influence during their 2008 custody fight. She claims the judge who ultimately granted Bronstein permanent physical custody of eight-year-old Roan never allowed her side to be fully heard. “He was the editor of the only newspaper in that town where judges are elected,” Stone said, insisting her celebrity offered little advantage in a system she calls “punishing to women who challenge stereotypes”.
Court filings at the time cited concerns that Stone “overreacted” to minor health issues—reports she now calls misogynistic. She previously told a 2023 podcast that the judge asked Roan whether he knew his mother “made sex movies,” a reference to her breakout erotic thriller, and used that against her custody claim.
Stone’s new remarks arrive as Bronstein, 75, keeps a low public profile; requests for comment have gone unanswered. The veteran foreign-correspondent-turned-editor left daily journalism in 2012 and later stepped down from the Center for Investigative Reporting board. He has been married to Christine Borders, with whom he shares two children, since 2006.
Stone, meanwhile, is enjoying a late-career renaissance that includes film cameos, activism and motherhood to Roan, now 26, plus her younger adopted sons Laird, 21, and Quinn, 20. Roan formally added “Stone” to his surname in 2024—a move the actress recently called “the greatest Mother’s Day gift.”
With her podcast revelations trending across social platforms, Stone says speaking out is worth the risk of legal fallout: “I was punished once for changing the rules about how we see women,” she said. “This time I’m not afraid.” Her words have reignited debate over celebrity privacy agreements, the power imbalance in high-profile divorces and whether America’s family-court system still judges mothers by double standards.
