Princess Cruises has launched an urgent search-and-rescue operation after a crew member was reported overboard from the 142,229-ton Regal Princess while the ship was sailing off Cancún early Monday, 13 July 2026. According to a statement provided by the cruise line, “the crew member is currently unaccounted for, and an active search and rescue operation is underway.” Princess says it is coordinating with maritime authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard, which joined the effort shortly after the initial alert. AIS tracking data show the 3,560-passenger vessel abandoning its scheduled approach to Cozumel around 6 a.m. ET and performing a Williamson Turn—part of the standard “Code Oscar” protocol—to return to the GPS position logged at the time of the emergency. The missed Cozumel call means the Western Caribbean voyage, which left Fort Lauderdale on 11 July and was also due in Belize City and Roatán, is already disrupted; Princess has not confirmed whether later ports will be maintained. Details about the crew member—including identity, nationality and the circumstances leading up to the incident—have not been released. Survival odds hinge on rapid detection, sea state and injuries sustained in the fall. Caribbean water temperatures near 84 °F this week reduce hypothermia risk, but maritime safety studies put overall rescue rates for overboard cases at roughly 6 percent. Passengers on board report cabin announcements requesting vigilance at rails and balconies while the bridge coordinates grid searches with Coast Guard aircraft and nearby merchant ships, as required under international law. Princess says counseling services have been activated for the ship’s 1,300-plus crew and guests who may have witnessed the event. The Regal Princess—delivered in 2014 and home-porting in Port Everglades for the summer season—has previously diverted to assist distressed mariners, but this is the first overboard incident reported on the vessel in 2026. Princess Cruises promises further updates “as soon as more information becomes available,” stressing that the top priority remains locating the missing crew member and supporting affected colleagues and family.
