Iconic Red Lobster in Times Square Shuts Its Doors—What Went Wrong and What’s Next?
• Hot Trendy News
Red Lobster’s flagship Times Square restaurant—its only location in New York City—will serve its final Cheddar Bay Biscuits on Sunday, June 14, ending a 23-year run at 5 Times Square.
A spokesperson for the seafood chain said “extensive and prolonged construction” around the building has choked off foot traffic and visibility, while the property’s planned conversion to residential use made continued operations “no longer viable.” Employees will be offered transfers to other Red Lobster restaurants along with transition pay, the company confirmed.
The shuttering caps years of turbulence for Red Lobster, which emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2024 after closing more than 100 under-performing units nationwide. Sales slid 6.2 percent in 2025 to $1.56 billion as the chain grappled with debt, leadership changes and the fallout from a money-losing “Endless Shrimp” promotion. Industry analysts say pricey Midtown rent—reportedly $2.2 million a year for the 16,000-square-foot, three-story space—paired with pedestrian detours created a profit squeeze the brand could no longer absorb.
Opened in 2003, the Times Square outpost became a tourist magnet and photo backdrop thanks to its towering red-neon lobster sign. It hosted Broadway crowds, free-lobster giveaways and countless family celebrations, helping Red Lobster test menu rollouts before going nationwide. Its closure follows last week’s shutdown of the brand’s oldest restaurant in Tallahassee, Fla., and underscores a broader pullback as the Orlando-based chain trims real-estate costs and revamps its menu strategy.
For Times Square, the departure of a recognizable national name signals the area’s continuing post-pandemic churn, with several multi-level eateries replaced by mixed-use projects aimed at residents rather than tourists. Construction fencing now obscures the once-bustling corner of 41st Street and Seventh Avenue, and developers plan to convert upper floors of 5 Times Square into luxury apartments.
Red Lobster says it remains committed to the New York metropolitan market and is “evaluating other potential sites.” In the meantime, loyal fans craving Admiral’s Feasts will have to trek to restaurants in Yonkers, Secaucus or Staten Island.
Key takeaways for diners and investors
• Last day of service: Sunday, June 14, 2026
• Reason cited: construction disruptions and future residential conversion
• Impacted staff: offered transfers and additional pay
• Broader context: follows bankruptcy-era cost cutting and more than 100 prior closures
• Market outlook: chain operates about 500 U.S. units after retrenchment; further location reviews are underway.
