Qinwen Zheng Shocks Rome: Dramatic Comeback Ignites Italian Open 2026 Dream Run
• Hot Trendy News

Chinese star Qinwen Zheng, 23, will open her 2026 clay campaign at the WTA 1000 Internazionali BNL d’Italia by facing world No. 58 Anna Bondar in the first round on 5 May. The pair met at the same venue last year, with Zheng prevailing 7-6(2), 6-4.
Rome has long been a happy hunting ground for Zheng: she reached back-to-back quarter-finals in 2023 and 2024 and broke through to the semi-finals in 2025 before falling to Coco Gauff.
Her road to the Eternal City, however, was rocky. An elbow issue forced her out of April’s Stuttgart Open, delaying her clay-court debut. The same injury had already ruled her out of the 2026 Australian Open in January.
Signs of resurgence came in Madrid last month: Zheng dismissed former major champion Sofia Kenin and pushed reigning Australian Open winner Elena Rybakina to three sets, serving with pace and dictating with her trademark forehand.
Holding a 2-0 head-to-head edge over Bondar, Zheng could meet the No. 15 seed in round two and chase a fourth straight deep run in Rome. The slow Foro Italico clay suits her heavy forehand angles and explosive serve, making the event a crucial barometer for her French Open ambitions.
With her Olympic title defense looming this summer, Zheng’s ceiling hinges on staying healthy and solid on clay. A statement win in Rome would not only jump-start her comeback but also remind the tour that, when fit, she remains one of the most dangerous young forces of the clay-court season.
