PWHL Expands to Motor City: Detroit Scores New Women’s Hockey Team for 2026 Season
• Hot Trendy News
Detroit is officially getting its own Professional Women’s Hockey League franchise, and the buzz around “PWHL Detroit” is already electrifying Hockeytown. League officials confirmed today that the expansion club will take the ice at Little Caesars Arena beginning with the 2026-27 season, marking the PWHL’s ninth team and its first foray into Michigan.
Home-ice advantage won’t be all the Motor City gains. The PWHL announced that Detroit will host both the 2026 PWHL Awards Ceremony on June 16 and the 2026 PWHL Draft at the historic Fox Theatre on June 17, turning the city into the epicenter of women’s hockey this summer. Fans who place a time-stamped season-ticket deposit now will receive priority access to those draft tickets, adding urgency for supporters eager to secure their seats.
Detroit’s path to a permanent franchise was paved by record-setting neutral-site crowds. Little Caesars Arena drew 13,736 fans for the league’s first neutral game in 2024, then shattered U.S. women’s hockey attendance records twice more—peaking at 15,938 during March’s Takeover Tour™ matchup. Those sell-out numbers convinced both league executives and local stakeholders that demand in Michigan is anything but neutral.
Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, the business arm behind the NHL’s Red Wings and MLB’s Tigers, spearheaded Detroit’s successful bid and will manage business operations for the PWHL club. President and CEO Chris Ilitch called the team “an exciting next step for our city and the continued momentum of women’s hockey,” noting its potential to fuel Detroit’s broader sports-driven revitalization efforts.
Corporate support is already robust. Detroit-based Ally Financial has signed on as the inaugural partner, with its logo appearing on the front of every PWHL Detroit jersey. Ally’s chief marketing officer Andrea Brimmer said the deal underscores the company’s commitment to equitable investment in women’s sports.
In a nod to the city’s industrial grit, the expansion team will skate in a black-and-silver palette accented by a flash of red that tips its helmet to the Red Wings’ storied history. The final team name and logo are slated for release later this year, giving fans another milestone to anticipate.
Why the hype matters: Michigan already ranks among North America’s deepest talent pools for girls’ hockey. With a hometown PWHL club, those athletes gain a clear professional pathway without leaving the state, and local businesses gain a fresh draw for year-round downtown traffic. Early projections suggest a meaningful boost for surrounding restaurants, hotels, and retail on game nights.
Season-ticket deposits are open now via DetroitPWHL.com, and the league promises additional roster-build details in the coming weeks. For Detroiters who have been packing the arena for neutral-site games, the next chant is simple: “Let’s go, PWHL Detroit!”
