Record-Breaking Heatwave Triggers Emergency in Pima County—What Residents Need to Know
• Hot Trendy News
Residents of Pima County are bracing for a triple-threat weekend of extreme heat, traffic detours, and packed government agendas as August reaches its peak.
The National Weather Service has extended its Excessive Heat Warning for western Pima County through at least Sunday evening, with desert highs expected to top 110 °F and nighttime lows hovering in the 80s. County health officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Cooling centers from Ajo to Tucson are expanding hours, and free Sun Tran rides are available for anyone traveling to a designated cooling site.
Travelers should also build extra time into west-side commutes. Kinney Road will close at McCain Loop beginning 4 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, while crews repair a ruptured waterline beneath the pavement. Detours will funnel traffic onto Gates Pass and Picture Rocks roads; electronic message boards are already in place to guide drivers. Meanwhile, an unrelated law-enforcement investigation continues to block portions of Wade and Valencia roads in the Star Valley area. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has not released details but says motorists should avoid the corridor until further notice.
On the policy front, the Board of Supervisors has scheduled an unusually busy slate of five public meetings between Aug. 24 and Aug. 31 to finalize next year’s $2.3 billion budget, vote on a countywide wildfire-mitigation plan, and discuss emergency heat-relief funding for unincorporated communities. Agendas and livestream links are posted on the county website, and public comment is being accepted online 24 hours before each session.
What it means for you:
• Heat: Expect dangerous temperatures through the weekend; visit pima.gov/heat for real-time cooling-center maps.
• Roads: Use I-10 or Avra Valley Road as alternatives to the Kinney and Star Valley closures.
• Government: Submit budget or heat-relief feedback at webcms.pima.gov/bos/comment to be read into the record.
By planning ahead—whether that means rearranging errands for the early morning, bookmarking alternate routes, or logging in to virtual board meetings—Pima County residents can stay safe, mobile, and civically engaged as August’s major story lines converge.
