OU Football Shock: Sooners’ Playoff Dreams Soar After Stunning Last-Second Win

DALLAS—Oklahoma football delivered its most electrifying win of the Brent Venables era, stunning No. 1 Texas 27-24 in Saturday’s Red River Rivalry on a last-second 47-yard field goal from Lou Groza winner Tate Sandell. The upset snaps a two-game skid, vaults the Sooners back to .500 in SEC play, and thrusts OU football firmly into the national conversation as October heats up. Key to the victory was a relentless defense that forced two Arch Manning interceptions, one of which true sophomore Peyton Bowen returned 42 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Venables’ unit now leads the nation in passing TDs allowed (one) while ranking top-five in total defense—a trend analysts say could propel Oklahoma toward a late-season playoff surge. Offensively, veteran quarterback John Mateer weathered Texas’ pass rush by leaning on Colorado State transfer Lloyd Avant, whose bruising 10-carry, 72-yard day set up Sandell’s clutch kicks. Mateer finished 18-of-26 for 155 yards, avoiding turnovers and keeping the Sooners within striking distance despite being outgained 382-238. Special teams proved decisive. Danny Okoye’s second-quarter punt block ignited the Cotton Bowl crowd and gave OU its first touchdown, while return man Isaiah Sategna III continued his breakout season with a 26-yard fourth-quarter punt return that flipped field position—an area where the Sooners entered the weekend ranked fifth nationally at 18.6 yards per return. The schedule offers little relief: dates with ranked Kentucky, Mississippi State and Ole Miss await. Yet Saturday’s statement win re-energizes a fan base tracking daily injury updates and playoff projections. With a top-10 defensive profile, a rejuvenated ground game and Sandell’s golden leg, OU football suddenly controls its destiny in both the SEC championship chase and the College Football Playoff race.
