Norway Team Sick? Mystery Illness Sweeps Squad Ahead of Crucial Showdown
• Hot Trendy News
Norway’s dream run to a first-ever World Cup quarter-final has hit an untimely hurdle, with a flu-like sickness bug sweeping through Ståle Solbakken’s squad just days before Saturday’s showdown with England in Miami. According to Norwegian daily Dagbladet and confirmed by Goal.com, striker Jørgen Strand Larsen and right-back Marcus Holmgren Pedersen have already missed matches after developing fever and sore throats, while several team-mates and staff are coughing and fatigued from constant cross-country travel.
Solbakken admitted the squad’s health “would be strange if one or two weren’t sick” given daily flights, icy air-conditioning and late-night kick-offs, but insisted Norway “expect to have everyone available” for the quarter-final. Team doctor Ola Sand echoed that optimism, telling reporters on Tuesday that all 26 players, including talisman Erling Haaland, had tested negative for serious viruses and were back in light training.
Even so, England’s analysts are monitoring events closely. The Lions remember how a similar respiratory virus ravaged Brazil’s camp at the 2022 tournament and are preparing for late personnel changes. Norway, meanwhile, are already forced into defensive reshuffles: if Pedersen is not fully fit, Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Ryerson is expected to continue at right-back, while veteran Stefan Strandberg could deputise in central defence.
Fitness concerns also surround star striker Haaland despite his seven-goal haul; the Manchester City ace was seen training in a protective snood and skipped Wednesday’s open session, fuelling speculation he is nursing a mild throat infection. Norway insist the move was “purely precautionary”, but their game plan – relentless pressing and quick counters – demands full energy levels.
Historically, illness outbreaks have stung Scandinavian sides before knockout games: Denmark’s stomach bug on the eve of Euro 2024 led to a limp last-16 exit. Sports scientists say Miami’s 30°C humidity can compound respiratory issues picked up in colder venues such as Seattle and Boston, where Norway played earlier in the tournament. Hydration protocols have therefore been tightened, with anti-dehydration salts added to every drinks break.
Across the aisle, Gareth Southgate’s England face problems of their own. Reece James is ruled out with a hamstring strain and Harry Kane has been training on his own programme after heavy minutes in the 3-2 win over Mexico. Yet England’s camp remains illness-free, a fact the FA attributes to charter flights and a single training base in Fort Lauderdale.
As kick-off approaches, the key question is whether Norway’s thin squad can shake off its virus in time to match England’s high tempo. If Solbakken’s men rediscover the energy that stunned Brazil, they could write another golden chapter in Norwegian football. If the bug lingers, Miami’s humid night might prove one challenge too many for this breakout team.
