Nebraska Football Stunner: Huskers Land Five-Star QB, Ignite Playoff Buzz
• Hot Trendy News
LINCOLN, Neb. — Halfway through the 2026 campaign, Nebraska football has already eclipsed last year’s pace, rolling into the bye week at 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten, good for a spot just outside the AP Top 25.
A blistering 5-0 start—powered by non-conference blowouts of Ohio, Bowling Green and FCS No. 6 North Dakota—ignited early playoff chatter in Lincoln. Reality struck when the Cornhuskers dropped consecutive one-score contests to then-No. 7 Indiana and Oregon, but Matt Rhule’s fourth squad is still positioned for its first nine-win season since 2016.
Offensive surge
Transfer quarterback Anthony Colandrea has transformed the attack, averaging 289 total yards per game and accounting for 20 touchdowns. His chemistry with junior wideouts Jacory Barney Jr. and Kwazi Gilmer—as well as freshman breakout back Jamal Rule—has vaulted Nebraska from 72nd to 18th nationally in scoring (38.4 ppg). Colandrea’s dual-threat ability was on full display against Maryland, where he threw for three scores and ran for 108 yards in a 48-23 win.
Rhule retooled the staff after last year’s 7-6 finish, hiring former San Diego State defensive mastermind Rob Aurich and bringing Dana Holgorsen aboard for his second season calling plays. The head coach also dipped heavily into the transfer portal to patch an offensive line that surrendered 35 sacks in 2025. “If I hear one person in this building talk about our schedule—get out,” Rhule warned at Big Ten Media Days, insisting Nebraska control what it can.
Blackshirts bending, not breaking
Aurich’s 4-2-5 scheme has tightened Nebraska’s pass coverage (193 ypg allowed, down from 247), but the run defense remains a work in progress after yielding 179 yards to Indiana. Linebacker Owen Chambliss, a transfer who followed Aurich from SDSU, and edge rusher Williams Nwaneri headline a unit that has already forced 14 turnovers—three more than all of last season. If the front seven can plug gaps on early downs, the Cornhuskers believe their opportunistic secondary can flip November showdowns.
Season-defining stretch ahead
After a welcome week off, Nebraska hosts Washington on Halloween before embarking on a three-game road swing to Illinois, Rutgers and rival Iowa. Home dates with No. 4 Ohio State and potential West-division spoiler Washington loom large. Win three of the final five and a Citrus or Outback Bowl berth is realistic; run the table and the Huskers could steal a spot in the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff.
Recruiting resonance
Winning cures all, and Rhule’s fast start is resonating on the trail. Four-star Bellevue West linebacker Kaden Baker and Georgia speedster Malik Sims both cited the new-look offense and “Blackshirt swagger” when pledging to the 2027 class this month. Locking down the 500-mile radius has been a program mantra, and the on-field product is finally matching the message.
Bottom line
Nebraska football hasn’t felt this relevant in a decade. Behind Colandrea’s electric playmaking, a rejuvenated coaching staff and a fan base that still owns the nation’s longest sellout streak, the Cornhuskers control their own destiny. Survive November, and “Hail Varsity” could echo all the way to Indianapolis.
