UPDATE — 1.7 Million Dozen Shell Eggs Pulled Nationwide: What Shoppers Need to Know August Egg Company has voluntarily recalled approximately 1.7 million dozen cage-free and certified-organic brown eggs after routine testing flagged possible Salmonella Enteritidis contamination. The recall, announced 6 June 2025, is linked to an ongoing multistate outbreak that has already sent 21 people to the hospital, according to the CDC. H2: Where the Recalled Eggs Were Sold • Grocery chains in California and Nevada: Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Raley’s, Food 4 Less and Ralphs • Walmart stores in nine states: Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Washington and Wyoming H2: Brand Names on the Recall List Marketside, O Organics, Simple Truth, Clover, Raley’s, Sunnyside, Sun Harvest, Nulaid, First Street and loose-flat bulk eggs were all packed at the affected plant. Use the carton UPC or plant code to confirm if your eggs are included (see next section). H2: How to Identify Affected Cartons 1. Look for plant code P-6562 or CA-5330 stamped on the side of the carton. 2. Check the Julian date: 032 – 126 (corresponding to production between 1 Feb and 6 May 2025). 3. Match any of these details with a “sell-by” date from 4 Mar – 19 Jun 2025. If all three match, your eggs are under recall. Tip: Take a photo of the code before returning the carton; some retailers require it for reimbursement. H2: What to Do if You Have the Eggs • Do NOT eat the eggs—even if they look or smell normal. • Seal them in a plastic bag and return to the store of purchase for a full refund. • Thoroughly wash any surfaces or utensils that contacted the eggs. Consumers can also call August Egg Company’s hotline at 1-800-710-2554 (9 a.m.–5 p.m. PT) for questions about refunds and safe disposal. H2: Symptoms to Watch For Salmonella infection usually develops 6–72 hours after eating contaminated food. Common signs include fever, abdominal cramps, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea and vomiting. Most healthy adults recover within a week, but children, seniors and people with weakened immune systems can develop severe or life-threatening complications. Seek medical care if you experience persistent high fever, prolonged diarrhea or signs of dehydration. H2: Why the Recall Matters Eggs are a kitchen staple, so a single contaminated batch can quickly spread nationwide. August Egg Company says it has diverted all current production to a pasteurizing facility while it completes a top-to-bottom food-safety audit. Until the FDA clears the plant, no fresh shell eggs from the facility will reach store shelves. H2: Quick Checklist for Shoppers ☐ Check your fridge for brown organic or cage-free eggs purchased since February. ☐ Match plant code P-6562 or CA-5330 and Julian dates 032-126. ☐ Dispose safely or return to the retailer for a refund. ☐ Disinfect countertops, fridge shelves and utensils that contacted the eggs. ☐ Monitor for Salmonella symptoms for up to one week after exposure. Bookmark this page for updates; the FDA and CDC will post additional brand names or distribution areas if the investigation expands.
