Munich Airport Travel Alert: Live Updates on Flight Delays, Security Strikes & Major Terminal Expansion
• Hot Trendy News
A surprise blizzard swept across Bavaria on Thursday night, 19 February 2026, forcing Munich Airport (MUC) to suspend runway operations and cancel more than 100 flights. About 500 Lufthansa passengers found themselves confined to five aircraft on the tarmac for up to nine hours after the last apron buses were recalled and many ground-handling staff had already gone home.
According to airport officials, the fast-intensifying snowfall dropped visibility below minimums within minutes, leaving parked jets without safe boarding bridges or stairs. With no replacement bus drivers available, crews were instructed to keep passengers on board until daybreak when ploughs could reopen taxiways.
Travellers documented the ordeal on social media, describing dwindling food supplies, dimmed cabin lights and locked lavatories as temperatures outside fell to –8 °C. “We weren’t even offered water for six hours,” wrote one flyer en route to Barcelona, echoing dozens of similar complaints that quickly went viral and triggered calls for compensation.
Lufthansa issued an apology Friday morning, citing “extraordinary operational constraints” and emphasizing that passenger safety superseded convenience. Munich Airport’s management conceded communication lapses and launched an internal review of winter-service staffing levels. Consumer watchdogs note that EU261 rules still entitle delayed customers to meals, hotel rooms or cash payouts when “extraordinary circumstances” are handled poorly.
The overnight shutdown triggered a cascade of delays across the airline’s European network, with knock-on effects expected through the weekend. Travellers holding Lufthansa or codeshare tickets are urged to rebook online or via the carrier’s call centre rather than queue at airport counters. Rail connections between Munich and Frankfurt are accepting affected flight coupons at no extra charge.
Munich Airport says all runways are now clear, but warns that de-icing backlogs could still disrupt early-morning departures. The hub plans to increase reserve bus drivers and expand its snow-removal fleet before unveiling the new Terminal 1 pier later this year—a project designed to add 6 million passengers of annual capacity and more covered gangways that lessen reliance on apron buses during extreme weather.
For now, passengers are advised to monitor flight status, allow extra transfer time and dress for winter conditions in case another alpine squall sweeps through southern Germany.
