M&T Bank Mobile Banking Down: Outage Locks Users Out—Steps to Restore Access
• Hot Trendy News
UPDATE – SEPTEMBER 19 2025
Customers across the Northeast woke up Friday to find the M&T Bank mobile app and portions of its online banking platform unresponsive, triggering a spike of “M&T Bank mobile banking down” searches as direct-deposit payday postings failed to appear.
WHAT HAPPENED
Beginning around 4 a.m. ET, Downdetector logged more than 2,300 outage reports, peaking near 7 a.m. as users encountered “system temporarily unavailable” errors when opening the M&T Mobile app or attempting Zelle transfers.
By mid-morning, local newsrooms from Baltimore to Hartford were inundated with calls. WBAL-TV in Maryland confirmed “intermittent issues with online and mobile banking” while noting some customers saw zero balances after scheduled deposits. Connecticut outlet WFSB reported similar complaints, adding that branch phone lines had wait times exceeding 45 minutes.
BANK RESPONSE
At 8:52 a.m., the bank’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account posted: “We are currently experiencing issues impacting certain platforms, including Mobile. Our teams are working to restore full service and ensure pending deposits are accurately reflected.”
A follow-up statement emailed to media blamed “a scheduled overnight technology upgrade that did not complete as expected,” emphasizing that no customer data were compromised.
IMPACT ON PAYDAY DIRECT DEPOSITS
Several employers transmit payroll files to banks late Thursday. Because the internal posting process stalled, deposits appeared missing even though funds were already received by M&T’s core system, according to a bank spokesperson. Most deposits were visible again by 11 a.m., though outbound bill payments remained delayed.
WHAT CUSTOMERS CAN DO NOW
• Use desktop online banking: while the primary login page timed out for some, refreshing or clearing cache allowed many users to sign in successfully.
• ATM balance inquiry still works; cash withdrawals and debit card purchases are unaffected.
• If a scheduled ACH payment is due today, M&T says it will reimburse any late-payment fees caused by the outage. Save screenshots of error messages for documentation.
• For urgent transfers, call 1-800-724-2440 and request an agent-assisted transaction; wait times shortened after 12 p.m.
EXPERT ANALYSIS
Bank-technology consultant Teresa D’Angelo notes that most regional banks run nightly batch jobs on Fridays to handle weekend processing. “If one job fails, downstream services like mobile balance look-ups can freeze. The fact that cards and ATMs worked suggests a posting delay, not a core outage.”
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
M&T experienced a MOVEit-related data-breach disclosure in 2023 and a smaller mobile-app glitch in March 2024, but neither incident affected the core deposit system. Analysts say today’s disruption appears operational rather than security-related.
WHEN WILL SERVICE BE FULLY RESTORED?
By 2 p.m. ET, M&T told The Hartford Courant that “nearly all customer accounts now display correct balances,” with remaining fixes expected before end of day.
BOTTOM LINE
If your M&T Bank mobile banking is still down, try logging in via a web browser, keep receipts of any late fees, and monitor the bank’s status page or social media for real-time updates. The institution says all funds remain secure and will be accessible once the overnight upgrade is reconciled.
