Residents across Minnesota spent the weekend on high alert as a fresh round of tornado warnings lit up phones and sirens from the Twin Cities metro to the southern counties late Saturday, June 28, and into the early hours of Sunday, June 29 2025. The National Weather Service (NWS) first issued a tornado watch for a broad swath of western and central Minnesota—including Hennepin, Wright, Carver, McLeod and Kandiyohi counties—until 1 a.m. Sunday, then upgraded several cells to tornado warnings as rotation tightened on radar. Spotters near Hutchinson and Waconia reported funnel clouds, and emergency management confirmed downed trees and barn damage west of the metro. The new threat arrived less than 72 hours after Wednesday’s outbreak that spawned at least 10 confirmed tornadoes from Hartland to Rochester, along with flash flooding that swamped rural roads and cornfields. Power companies said more than 45,000 customers briefly lost electricity during that earlier wave, with crews still replacing poles when the next line of storms swept in Friday night. Meteorologists blame a slow-moving warm front draped across southern Minnesota for the multi-day severe streak. “Deep Gulf moisture, temps near 90 °F and wind shear in the low levels are a perfect recipe for rotating supercells,” the NWS Twin Cities office warned in a forecast discussion. The agency urged anyone in a tornado warning polygon to shelter in a basement or interior room immediately and not wait for outdoor sirens, which may not be heard indoors during heavy rain and wind. Looking ahead, the Storm Prediction Center keeps much of Minnesota in a slight risk for severe weather through Monday as the boundary finally lifts north. Afternoon heating could refire storms capable of large hail, 70 mph gusts and additional isolated tornadoes. How to stay safe during Minnesota tornado warnings • Enable Wireless Emergency Alerts and NOAA Weather Radio. • Keep helmets, shoes and flashlights in your shelter area. • If driving, pull over and seek a sturdy building; do not hide under an overpass. • After the storm, watch for downed power lines and report gas leaks immediately.
