Mike Rowe Files $2 Million Lawsuit Against Discovery, Alleges Unpaid ‘Deadliest Catch’ Royalties
• Hot Trendy News
Dirty Jobs legend Mike Rowe has taken Warner Bros. Discovery back to court, claiming the company owes him “at least $2.04 million” for episodes of Deadliest Catch and its spinoffs that aired without his signature narration.
In a complaint filed July 1 by Rowe’s Lab Rat Productions, the 64-year-old host says a 2020 “pay-or-play” contract guaranteed $40,000 per episode—whether or not Discovery used his voice. According to the suit, the network chose different narrators for five episodes of Deadliest Catch season 21 and for 51 episodes across spinoffs like The Bait, Bloodline and The Viking Returns, yet never paid the contractual minimums.
Rowe also alleges that international versions of Deadliest Catch were “materially different” from U.S. broadcasts. If those edits count as “originally produced episodes,” Discovery’s liability could grow even larger, the filing warns.
The narrator, who has voiced the crab-fishing saga since its 2005 debut, says he learned of the unpaid shows only after fans flagged episodes missing his familiar baritone. His lawyers are demanding a jury trial and interest on the unpaid fees. Discovery declined to comment when reached by multiple outlets.
This isn’t the first legal dust-up between the parties. In 2025 Rowe sued over alleged missing streaming royalties tied to Dirty Jobs, accusing Discovery of short-changing him on licensing deals with DirecTV and YouTube TV. That case is still pending, according to court records, underscoring a deepening rift that could influence future seasons of both Dirty Jobs and Deadliest Catch.
For now, fans can expect Rowe’s gravelly narration to remain absent from upcoming Deadliest Catch offshoots—unless a judge forces Discovery to honor the disputed “pay-or-play” clause or the two sides reach a settlement. With a potential eight-figure tab looming once interest and longer international cuts are tallied, the stakes for Warner Bros. Discovery’s unscripted flagship have never been higher.
