Brace Yourself: Mega Winter Storm to Blast the Northeast—Latest Path, Power Outage Risks & Travel Alerts
• Hot Trendy News
A late-season winter storm is crashing spring plans across the western and central United States this weekend, dropping up to two feet of snow, slamming highways with black ice, and triggering a tornado outbreak farther east. Below is what you need to know before you hit the road or step outside.
WHERE THE SNOW IS FALLING
Western mountain ranges are taking the brunt of the system. The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center projects 18–24 inches for the Cascades and Northern Rockies through Sunday, with 8–16 inches in Utah and Colorado high country and 4–8 inches in Yellowstone National Park. Lower elevations in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, North Dakota, and Minnesota will see lighter snow but a sharp cold snap.
COLORADO’S QUICK HIT
The storm arrived overnight along the Front Range, dumping 6 inches on the foothills and 3.5 inches at Denver International Airport—Denver’s first measurable snow in more than a month—and sending morning lows into the 20s. I-70 over Vail Pass, I-80 across Wyoming, and I-25 from Cheyenne to Pueblo are under the highest black-ice risk as slushy pavement refreezes after sunset.
TEMPERATURE WHIPLASH
Many locations that flirted with 70 °F on Thursday will struggle to reach the mid-30s today. A 40-degree drop in under 24 hours not only taxes infrastructure but also turns wet roads into skating rinks. Even all-wheel-drive vehicles need winter-rated tires and triple stopping distance on ice.
SEVERE WEATHER TO THE EAST
While the West digs out, a “multiday severe weather outbreak” is firing from Arkansas to western New York. Forecasters have logged nearly two dozen tornadoes and more than 600 severe weather reports this week, with damaging winds and hail possible into Sunday night. If you live along the Mississippi or Ohio valleys, secure outdoor items and review your tornado shelter plan.
FLIGHT & POWER IMPACTS
• Major hubs: Denver, Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Minneapolis–St. Paul can expect de-icing delays and cascading cancellations. Check your airline’s mobile app before leaving for the airport.
• Power grid: Heavy, wet snow plus gusty winds could snap tree limbs and lines, especially in mountain valleys where snow loads exceed one foot. Keep phones charged and have flashlights ready.
SAFETY CHECKLIST
1. Delay non-essential travel through mountain passes until plows clear primary lanes and temperatures rise above freezing.
2. If you must drive, pack blankets, snacks, a full tank of gas, and tire chains where required.
3. Clear snow from all vehicle lights and roof to maintain visibility and avoid fines.
4. Indoors, protect pipes in unheated spaces and set faucets to drip during overnight lows below 20 °F.
5. Monitor NOAA Weather Radio or your local NWS office on X for updated warnings.
OUTLOOK
The current storm exits the Rockies late Sunday, but forecasters are already tracking a new Pacific system that could reload West Coast rain and mountain snow mid-week. Meanwhile, below-average temperatures are favored nationwide from April 25 to May 1, so keep the winter coat handy a little longer.
BOTTOM LINE
Spring’s calendar may say April, but Mother Nature still has winter firepower. Stay weather-aware, travel smart, and use the weekend to swap out dead flashlight batteries and replenish your emergency kit—because this won’t be the last curveball the season throws.
