Massive Hailstorm Turns Streets White: See Dramatic Damage Photos & Live Forecast Updates

Hail pounds the Plains and Midwest as spring storms turn violent
Severe thunderstorms have fired almost daily this week, dropping everything from quarter-size pellets to softball-sized stones across the central United States. Illinois currently leads the nation for 2026 with the most reports of hail and tornado damage, according to preliminary counts through April 19. On Thursday night, Kansas residents watched windshield-shattering chunks of ice slam communities from Salina to Topeka, where stones up to four inches in diameter were confirmed.
Why the hail outbreak?
A potent clash of Gulf moisture, unseasonably cold air aloft and a powerful jet-stream corridor has set the stage for “loaded gun” soundings over the Plains. Supercells have repeatedly formed just east of drylines in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas before racing into Missouri, Iowa and Illinois. Within these rotating storms, updrafts suspend embryonic ice for long periods, allowing stones to grow well beyond golf-ball size before gravity finally wins.
Record-breaking stones?
National Weather Service surveys documented 3.5-inch hail near Mankato, Minnesota, on April 13, rivaling the region’s April record. Farther south, storm chasers measured baseball- to softball-sized missiles during the April 24 outbreak, shattering skylights and punching holes in siding.
More large hail possible this weekend
Forecast models keep a stalled frontal boundary draped from the Texas Panhandle into the Mid-Mississippi Valley. The Weather Channel warns that another round of giant hail and isolated tornadoes could erupt Sunday into Monday, putting 21 million people under a level-3 or higher severe-weather risk. Residents from Oklahoma City to Chicago should prepare for rapid storm development after 3 p.m. each afternoon.
Insurance and safety tips
• Park vehicles in garages or under sturdy carports.
• Close blinds and curtains to reduce flying-glass hazards.
• Inspect roofs promptly; small punctures can lead to costly leaks.
• Document damage with time-stamped photos before cleanup.
• Contact your insurer within 24 hours; many companies deploy cat-response teams during widespread hail events.
How to spot hail on radar
Look for a “hail spike” — an elongated streak of reflectivity extending outward from the main storm core. Dual-polarity products like differential reflectivity (ZDR) can also flag areas where stones exceed two inches in diameter.
Climate connection?
While individual hail events are weather-driven, recent studies suggest a northward shift in peak hail frequency as warming pushes the strongest instability out of the southern Plains. However, the ingredients for huge hail—steep lapse rates, strong shear and deep moisture—remain firmly in place during volatile spring patterns.
Bottom line
With atmospheric fuel still plentiful, the 2026 hail season shows no sign of easing. Stay weather-aware, keep a reliable warning app handy and move vehicles under cover at the first rumble of thunder.
