Marvin Bagley III Draws Contender Frenzy in 2026 NBA Free Agency

Free-agent forward Marvin Bagley III is openly campaigning to remain with the Dallas Mavericks, telling team sources that he is “looking for a permanent home” and hopes to strike a multiyear deal when the NBA’s July negotiating window opens. The 27-year-old averaged 10.5 points and 5.9 rebounds in 19.4 minutes this season and believes a full training camp in Jason Kidd’s system can unlock the double-double production he flashed as a No. 2 overall pick with Sacramento. Bagley’s journey to Dallas has been winding. Sacramento moved him to Detroit in 2022; the Pistons then packaged him with Isaiah Livers and two second-round picks to acquire cap flexibility from the Washington Wizards in January 2026. A month later Dallas pounced, betting that Bagley’s length, rim-running and left-handed touch could complement Luka Doncic’s pick-and-roll mastery. Health remains the swing factor. A right-shoulder strain ended Bagley’s regular season on April 12 and limited him to cameo minutes in the first playoff round. Team doctors have cleared him for full off-season work, and Bagley has already joined Dallas player-development staff for daily shooting and mobility sessions at the team’s Frisco facility. Cap math favors a reunion. Dallas can use Early Bird rights to offer up to four years and roughly $55 million without dipping into the mid-level exception, preserving flexibility to chase a defensive wing. League executives say Charlotte, Orlando and Brooklyn have exploratory interest, but multiple rival scouts doubt anyone will outbid the Mavericks unless they miss on top-tier bigs in free agency. For Dallas, retaining Bagley would solidify a front-court rotation that also features Dereck Lively II and veteran Maxi Kleber. Sources indicate the coaching staff envisions Bagley as the first big off the bench who can also close small-ball lineups at power forward when his three-pointer—34.2 percent on 1.7 attempts—falls consistently. Bagley, who starred at Duke and still owns a home base in the Dallas suburb of Prosper, has told confidants he wants stability for his young family and believes a long-term pact will reignite the promise that once made him the face of the Kings’ rebuild. With both player and franchise aligned, league insiders view a deal in the opening hours of free agency as “likely,” setting up Bagley to chase the deep-playoff run that has eluded him since entering the league in 2018.
