Luka Doncic Stuns NBA with 60-Point Triple-Double, Ignites Mavericks’ Championship Buzz

Luka Dončić’s incandescent start to the 2026-27 season reached a new peak Friday night as the Slovenian superstar erupted for 53 points, powering the Los Angeles Lakers past the Portland Trail Blazers 124-118 at Crypto.com Arena. Dončić drilled a 61-foot buzzer-beater to close the first half, poured in 20 of his points in a third-quarter takeover and buried a late floater with 28 seconds left to ice the Lakers’ fourth straight win. Key takeaways for fans and fantasy managers: • Historic streak: Dončić now owns four consecutive 40-plus-point games, joining Laker legends Kobe Bryant, Elgin Baylor and George Mikan as the only players in franchise history to achieve the feat. • Balanced dominance: Over his last seven contests he’s averaging 41.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 6.0 made threes, a blend of volume and efficiency unseen in modern NBA analytics. • NBA Cup impact: Friday’s victory keeps Los Angeles unbeaten (3-0) in West Group B play, putting the purple and gold on a collision course with Denver for a quarterfinal berth. Game flow: Portland surged to a 16-point lead behind Damian Lillard and Deni Avdija, but a 32-11 Lakers run flipped the script as Dončić outscored the Blazers single-handedly in the third. Austin Reaves (25 points) and Walker Kessler (16 points, 12 boards) supplied timely support, while Portland’s late rally stalled when Dončić’s lane jumper pushed the margin back to six. Why it matters: 1. MVP odds swing — Sportsbooks moved Dončić to the co-favorite alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo overnight. 2. Record watch — Dončić’s 11th career 50-point outing ties him with Stephen Curry for eighth all-time before age 28. 3. Viral momentum — The 61-footer, clocked at 30.7 mph, exploded on social media, generating 12 million views within three hours and driving a 27 percent spike in Lakers merchandise sales, according to team officials. What’s next: • Lakers head to Detroit on Sunday looking for a fifth straight win and a chance for Dončić to tie Bryant’s franchise record of five consecutive 40-point games. • Trail Blazers return to Moda Center Saturday vs. San Antonio, hoping to snap a two-game skid. Bottom line: Luka Dončić isn’t just hot—he’s rewriting early-season record books, turning the In-Season Tournament into a personal showcase and putting the NBA on notice that the Larry O’Brien trophy may run through Los Angeles once again.
