Long John Silver’s Closing? Iconic Seafood Chain Shuts Down Locations—What It Means for Fans
• Hot Trendy News
Long John Silver’s is trimming its U.S. footprint again, and seafood-lovers nationwide are asking the same question: why are Long John Silver’s locations closing?
The iconic fish-and-chips chain shuttered 23 restaurants across 18 states last year, cutting its store count to just 479—roughly half the number it boasted in 2019. A newly released franchise-disclosure document shows a net decline of 110 restaurants since the start of 2023, the steepest pullback in more than a decade. Markets hit hardest include Arizona (3 closures), Colorado (2), Connecticut (2), Florida (1) and Indiana (1), along with dozens of other single-store exits.
Yet Long John Silver’s insists the wave of closings does not signal a sinking ship. Company spokesperson Laura Ellis says each shutdown stemmed from “routine portfolio optimization” such as expiring leases, remodel plans or franchisees exiting the system—not a mass retreat. After Four Oaks Partners acquired the brand in late 2022, leadership accelerated a strategy to prune underperforming units—especially co-branded outlets that once shared real estate with Taco Bell, KFC and A&W. About 70–75 of the 110 closures since 2023 were those dual-concept stores.
While the restaurant count keeps falling, sales are quietly rising. Long John Silver’s reports 16 consecutive quarters of same-store growth, with systemwide revenue climbing from $400 million in 2022 to nearly $430 million in 2025. Management credits remodeled kitchens, a simplified menu and the rollout of digital ordering for stronger margins in the leaner fleet. More than 115 locations have already been refreshed with modern décor, double-drive-thru lanes and updated fryers designed to cut oil use by 20%.
Expansion isn’t off the menu, either. The company confirms 25 new freestanding restaurants are in active development, targeting mid-size cities in the Southeast and Midwest. Those openings, plus franchise re-entries in remodeled markets, could begin offsetting closures as early as 2027, depending on construction timelines and permitting.
What it means for diners
• Check the locator: Before a fish-and-fries fix, verify your nearest store. Several markets now have a “last man standing” situation after multiple closures.
• Expect fresh looks: Units that survive the cull often debut new lighthouse-inspired façades, brighter dining rooms and expanded family-meal bundles.
• Watch joint sites: Co-branded Long John Silver’s/KFC or LJS/Taco Bell combos are most likely to disappear; corporate strategy favors standalone builds going forward.
• Deals go digital: The chain’s strongest traffic gains come from its mobile app, which pushes weekly $5 basket promos and free-funnel-cake offers to loyalty members.
Bottom line
Long John Silver’s closing locations can spark rumors that the 56-year-old brand is going out of business, but the reality is more nuanced. The seafood specialist is shrinking to grow—shedding legacy leases, investing in tech-forward remodels and choosing quality over quantity in new builds. For now, fewer stores doesn’t equal a disappearing brand; it’s a reset aimed at sailing a smaller, more profitable fleet into its next chapter.
