#lawsuit aims to stop ufc fight at the white house
Breaking: Lawsuit Moves to Block First-Ever UFC Fight at the White House—Here’s What Could Happen Next
• Hot Trendy News
Washington—A pair of Virginia residents is asking a federal judge to slam the brakes on “UFC Freedom 250,” the mixed-martial-arts card President Donald Trump and UFC president Dana White plan to stage on the White House South Lawn on 14 June, the former president’s 80th birthday.
Filed late Friday in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the 38-page complaint argues that transforming one of the nation’s most recognizable government properties into a for-profit fight venue is “unlawful, corrupt and unprecedented.” The plaintiffs—retired Marine Capt. Angela Reyes and history teacher Robert Blanton—say the event violates the federal Antideficiency Act, the Presidential Records Act and National Park Service rules that limit commercial use of presidential grounds.
Key allegations
• Emoluments concern: The suit claims gate receipts, pay-per-view fees and corporate sponsorships will enrich Trump, White House Heritage LLC and Dana White while leveraging taxpayer-funded property.
• Safety and oversight: Because the South Lawn is federal land, the D.C. Combat Sports Commission will not regulate the bouts, leaving “no independent medical or anti-doping safeguards,” the filing states.
• Precedent risk: Plaintiffs warn the card would open the door to “concerts, car races or any corporate spectacle the occupant of the Oval Office finds politically useful.”
White House response
Press secretary Laura Hyatt insisted the event is authorized under a 2025 bipartisan law that lets the Executive Branch host “special celebrations” tied to America 250, the upcoming semiquincentennial. “No taxpayer dollars are being used; private sponsors are covering all costs,” Hyatt said in a brief statement, adding that the Justice Department will “vigorously defend” the plan.
UFC’s stance
In a separate release, Dana White called the lawsuit “grandstanding by people who hate combat sports.” He said fighters have volunteered at reduced purses “to honor the troops” and that proceeds beyond expenses will fund veterans’ charities. The promotion has already erected a modular octagon, grandstands for 5,500 fans and a media platform overlooking the Rose Garden.
What happens next
Judge Amit Mehta set an expedited schedule, giving the administration until Tuesday to respond and scheduling a Wednesday morning hearing on the request for a temporary restraining order. Legal scholars note Mehta halted several Trump-era initiatives during the former president’s first term, but they caution that courts traditionally defer to the White House on security and ceremonial matters.
Political backdrop
Trump, the presumptive 2026 Republican nominee, has leaned heavily on pop-culture events as campaign backdrops. Polling shows MMA is especially popular with the blue-collar voters his strategists target. Opponents contend the South Lawn spectacle blurs the line between governance and electioneering.
If the court blocks the fight, UFC officials say they will relocate the card to Capital One Arena on 24 hours’ notice. For now, ticket holders, fighters and millions of pay-per-view buyers are watching the docket as closely as any tale-of-the-tape.
