Los Angeles, CA — Lawrence McCutcheon, the five-time Pro Bowl running back who led the Los Angeles Rams during the 1970s and later shaped the team’s front office, died Friday, October 23, 2026, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 76. McCutcheon’s Death: What Happened? The Rams confirmed the news in a family statement, noting McCutcheon “passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones,” following his courageous fight with the neurodegenerative disorder. His passing ends a career and life interwoven with the franchise for 44 years as player, scout, and director of player personnel. Who Was Lawrence McCutcheon? • Drafted in 1972 out of Colorado State, McCutcheon became the Rams’ featured back from 1973-1977, recording five straight 1,000-yard seasons. • He set a then-NFL playoff rushing record with 202 yards vs. Washington in 1975, earning the nickname “Clutch.” • After retiring with 6,578 rushing yards, he quickly transitioned to scouting before rising to vice president of player personnel in 2003. Legacy on the Field and in the Front Office McCutcheon’s vision helped assemble the 1999 “Greatest Show on Turf” roster that captured Super Bowl XXXIV, cementing his legacy beyond his own on-field exploits. Former teammates remember him as “a quiet leader who let his legs do the talking,” while Hall of Fame coach Dick Vermeil credits McCutcheon for spotting undrafted talent that kept the Rams competitive in the early 2000s. Impact on Colorado State and Community Before NFL stardom, McCutcheon starred for the Colorado State Rams, where he still ranks fourth all-time in career rushing yards. The university announced plans to honor him with a helmet decal for the rest of the 2026 season.
