Kyle Larson Shocks Racing World with Record Indy 500 Qualifying Speed — What His Historic Lap Means for NASCAR
• Hot Trendy News
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Kyle Larson is once again chasing motorsports immortality on Memorial Day weekend, attempting the grueling Indy 500 / Coca-Cola 600 “Double” that totals 1,100 miles of high-speed racing in less than 12 hours. The Hendrick Motorsports star will strap into Arrow McLaren’s No. 17 Chevrolet at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Sunday afternoon, then sprint to Charlotte Motor Speedway for his regular No. 5 HendrickCars.com Camaro in NASCAR’s longest race.
Larson’s 2025 bid comes one year after torrential rain forced him to abandon the second leg of the Double, leaving an asterisk on what had been billed as a historic debut. The 31-year-old Californian is determined to finish the job this time, even after a turbulent Month of May that included two practice crashes and a hectic qualifying run that placed him 19th on the Indy 500 grid.
Despite the setbacks, oddsmakers still list the 2021 NASCAR Cup champion among the dark-horse favorites in IndyCar’s biggest event thanks to his raw pace and Arrow McLaren’s stout Chevy power. Team owner Rick Hendrick has stationed a backup Hendrick Motorsports pit crew in Charlotte and chartered a helicopter plus private jet to execute the 460-mile dash from IMS to Concord, N.C. Immediately after the Borg-Warner Trophy celebration, Larson is scheduled to board the helicopter within 12 minutes of the checkered flag, aiming to reach Charlotte with roughly two hours to spare before driver introductions for the 6 p.m. ET green flag.
Weather, always a wildcard, looks more favorable this year, with forecasts calling for only a stray shower in Indianapolis and clear evening skies in North Carolina. That should eliminate the rain-delay chaos that scuttled Larson’s 2024 schedule and force-majeured his NASCAR points standings.
If Larson completes all 1,100 miles, he will become only the second driver ever to finish both races on the same day. Kurt Busch came closest for NASCAR in 2014, while John Andretti pioneered the feat in 1994. Tony Stewart’s 2001 run remains the benchmark, as he finished sixth at Indy and third in the 600. Larson openly admits Stewart’s performance is his target, though he insists his primary goal is “just to finish and learn.”
The Double isn’t merely a personal challenge; it’s also a marketing and technical showcase. Both IndyCar and NASCAR are experimenting with cross-promotion, and Chevrolet is eager to highlight the versatility of its racing engines on two iconic stages. Viewership projections for NBC (Indy 500) and FOX (Coke 600) are trending upward thanks in large part to Larson’s storyline.
From a competitive standpoint, Larson enters Charlotte as the Cup Series points leader after victories at Las Vegas, COTA, and Kansas. Crew chief Cliff Daniels has prepared a fresh intermediate-track chassis with the same aero package that dominated Phoenix in March. If travel goes smoothly, Larson believes fatigue won’t be an issue: “We run 600 miles every year; Indy is the extra piece,” he said earlier this week.
Fans will be able to track Larson through real-time social-media updates from Hendrick Motorsports and Arrow McLaren, plus a live cockpit camera during the Indy 500. Whether he lifts the Borg-Warner Trophy, the Coca-Cola 600 eagle, or both, Sunday has the potential to redefine modern American motorsports – and Kyle Larson’s already sparkling legacy.
