Kobe Bufkin Drops Season-Best 34, Ignites Hawks’ Rally in Thrilling Win
• Hot Trendy News
Kobe Bufkin’s rapid rise from G League standout to the Los Angeles Lakers’ 15th roster spot became official this week as the franchise signed the 22-year-old guard to a two-year contract that carries a team option for 2026-27.
The former Michigan Wolverine and 2023 first-round pick had dominated with the South Bay Lakers, pouring in 26.7 points per game on 51.3 percent shooting and 43 percent from deep across 26 G League outings. His 41-point explosion against the Capital City Go-Go last Wednesday underscored why L.A.’s front office moved quickly to lock him in before the All-Star break.
Bufkin’s NBA résumé is still short—four appearances for the Lakers this season and previous stints with the Hawks, Nets and Grizzlies—but coaches rave about his two-way upside, 6-foot-4 frame and improving playmaking. In limited NBA minutes he is averaging 3.0 points, 1.3 rebounds and aggressive on-ball defense, attributes head coach Darvin Ham says “fit the identity we’re building.”
The signing also gives the Lakers a cost-controlled guard who can grow alongside cornerstone wings Austin Reaves and Max Christie, while providing insurance for veteran ball-handlers D’Angelo Russell and Gabe Vincent. League insiders note that Bufkin’s non-guaranteed third season could become a valuable trade chip if L.A. chases another star next summer.
For Bufkin, the deal caps a whirlwind 18 months that began when Atlanta selected him 15th overall, then traded him to Brooklyn before he was waived last fall. Ten-day contracts in Memphis and Los Angeles followed, but it was his relentless scoring in El Segundo that finally earned a steady home. “This city embraced me early, and I’m ready to help the Lakers make a playoff push,” Bufkin said in the team’s announcement.
Search interest in “Kobe Bufkin contract,” “Lakers roster moves,” and “South Bay Lakers star” has surged since the news broke, and with the trade deadline looming, the rookie-scale guard could see rotational minutes sooner rather than later. If his G League numbers translate, Los Angeles may have uncovered a budget-friendly spark plug just in time for the stretch run.
