Klay Thompson’s Clutch OT 3-Pointer Seals 117-116 Heat Victory Over Reeling Clippers

Klay Thompson delivered a vintage reminder of his clutch pedigree on Wednesday night, burying a corner three with 0.7 seconds left in overtime to lift the Miami Heat over the Los Angeles Clippers 117-116 at the new Intuit Dome in Inglewood. The 34-year-old sharpshooter erupted for 30 points on 8-of-17 shooting from deep, partnering with Bam Adebayo’s season-high 35-point, 10-rebound effort and Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 27-point, 14-rebound, six-assist stat line to erase a 20-point first-half deficit. Miami’s comeback marked its third win in four outings, stabilizing the club at 3-5 after a rocky 0-4 start to the 2026-27 campaign. Thompson’s winner came off a perfectly drawn sideline inbound: Antetokounmpo caught the pass near the elbow, drew a double team, and zipped the ball to the left corner where Thompson was waiting. The four-time champion rose, fired, and silenced the crowd, punctuating a 9-2 Heat spurt that closed the extra period. The make highlighted Thompson’s ongoing “redemption season,” a theme he emphasized in training camp after injuries and two relocations—from Golden State to Dallas in 2024, then to Miami this past August. The Heat needed every basket to counter a desperate Clippers squad that has now dropped seven straight. Darius Garland paced Los Angeles with 26 points and seven assists, while Rui Hachimura poured in 21 points and Brook Lopez added 20. The Clippers stormed to a 43-19 second quarter and led 67-52 at halftime, but sputtered down the stretch as Miami’s defense tightened and Adebayo bullied the paint. Miami’s victory sets the stage for a marquee Thursday matchup at Golden State—Thompson’s first appearance in Chase Center wearing Heat black and red. The sold-out crowd is expected to greet him with a video tribute, and the national spotlight will further test a Heat roster that suddenly looks dangerous with Antetokounmpo’s MVP form, Adebayo’s two-way dominance, and Thompson’s revived shooting. Key Takeaways for Fans and Fantasy Managers • Thompson’s eight triples push him to 41.9% from deep on the season, his best clip since 2022-23. • Adebayo’s expanded scoring role (24.5 PPG) is legitimized by a career-high 12.0 free-throw attempts per night. • Giannis is averaging 29-14-6 in his first year in Miami, reminding observers why the Heat mortgaged future picks for him.
