Kat Abughazaleh Goes Viral: Inside the Gen Z Progressive Shaking Up Illinois’ 9th District
• Hot Trendy News
Chicago, IL—Searches for progressive firebrand Kat Abughazaleh have spiked this week, and it’s no surprise: the 27-year-old video journalist turned congressional hopeful has packed an election cycle’s worth of drama into just a few months.
Abughazaleh—known online for rapid-fire explainers debunking right-wing media—finished a close second in March’s Democratic primary for Illinois’ open 9th District, winning 34,707 votes and trailing former state senator Daniel Biss by only three points, despite being out-raised nearly 3-to-1. The unexpectedly tight race, amplified by Abughazaleh’s 1.2 million TikTok followers, has many pundits asking whether the district’s blue-collar base is ready for a Gen Z populist.
Momentum—and controversy—followed her off the trail. In late October, a Cook County grand jury indicted Abughazaleh and five activists on misdemeanor trespassing charges tied to a protest at a Broadview ICE processing center. She pleaded not guilty, calling the case “a political prosecution” designed to silence pro-immigrant organizers. The first hearing is set for May 26, keeping the candidate’s name in headlines as summer campaigning ramps up.
Yet the spotlight hasn’t always been hostile. Days before the primary, Abughazaleh’s on-stage correction of a debate moderator—she insisted that opposing “fascism” was her campaign’s top plank—went viral on X and Instagram, racking up 12 million views and landing her a CNN profile titled “Can Kat Abughazaleh translate viral moments into votes?”. Analysts say that authenticity is resonating with younger voters who see traditional Democrats as timid on corporate power and Gaza cease-fire calls.
Still, Abughazaleh faces steep hurdles if she pursues a write-in or 2028 rematch. Federal filings show her campaign spent nearly all of the $3.83 million it raised, with 88 percent coming from small-dollar donors. Re-igniting that grassroots engine will require fresh policy wins or another viral lightning strike.
Insiders note that the indictment could paradoxically help. “A courtroom fight over First-Amendment-protected protest plays directly into her anti-authoritarian brand,” says DePaul political scientist Marisol Vega. “If prosecutors overreach, she’ll claim martyr status and rake in national donations.”
Meanwhile, establishment Democrats are watching warily. An NBC Chicago report highlighted questions about Abughazaleh’s brief stint at progressive watchdog Media Matters and a short-lived 2023 campaign job; critics argue that her résumé is heavy on social media clout and light on governing chops.
For now, Abughazaleh is doubling down online, posting daily TikToks on Gaza, student-loan forgiveness, and a proposed $25 minimum wage. Whether that digital dominance can convert curiosity into ballots remains the billion-view question—but the surge in searches suggests voters haven’t scrolled past her just yet.
