Houston Texans Breakout WR Jayden Higgins Suffers Devastating Season-Ending ACL Tear at Practice
• Hot Trendy News
Houston Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins will miss the entire 2026 NFL season after suffering a torn ACL during Tuesday’s joint practice with the Las Vegas Raiders, multiple league sources confirmed less than an hour after the setback occurred.
The season-ending injury halts what had been a breakout trajectory for the 23-year-old former second-round pick. Higgins emerged as C.J. Stroud’s favorite red-zone target last year, finishing his rookie campaign with 41 receptions, 525 yards and a team-high six touchdowns while starting 10 games. Throughout spring workouts and the first two weeks of camp, Houston coaches repeatedly praised his improved route chemistry with Stroud, and the club’s initial depth chart listed Higgins opposite Nico Collins in the starting lineup.
Now head coach DeMeco Ryans must re-configure a suddenly thin receiver room. Tank Dell is still on a customized recovery timetable after his own multiligament knee reconstruction, Xavier Hutchinson remains an outside option, and 2025 third-rounder Jaylin Noel profiles best in the slot. General manager Nick Caserio could explore veteran free agents — names such as Courtland Sutton and Tyler Boyd have already circulated among league insiders — but internal development may be the Texans’ first path forward.
For Higgins, Wednesday’s MRI results begin a lengthy rehab clock that typically spans nine to twelve months. Because the injury occurred in mid-August, the earliest realistic return targets training camp 2027. The team is expected to place him on injured reserve once rosters are finalized, freeing a spot for a replacement signing but guaranteeing Higgins a second-year salary while he rehabilitates.
Fantasy-football managers and DFS players should downgrade Stroud’s touchdown upside and elevate Collins’ target share projections. Dell’s medical checkpoints also gain added importance; if he cannot suit up for Week 1 against Buffalo, Houston could enter the opener with only one proven outside weapon. Rookie sixth-rounder Lewis Bond may now be fast-tracked into preseason game plans, and tight end Dalton Schultz could see more red-zone work.
Long term, Higgins’ combination of 6-foot-4 size and jump-ball skills still makes him a cornerstone piece of Houston’s offense. The organization controls his rights through 2029 thanks to a standard four-year rookie contract plus the fifth-year option. Assuming a full recovery, he should return in time to pair with Stroud during the quarterback’s prime window.
For now, however, the Texans’ 2026 playoff aspirations take an undeniable hit. The coaching staff preached “continuity” all offseason; losing Higgins forces an early test of that mantra and thrusts Houston back onto the transaction wire just three weeks before real games count.
