Jannik Sinner Powers into Paris Masters Quarterfinals – Italian Star Eyes Biggest Title Yet
• Hot Trendy News
Italy’s 23-year-old sensation Jannik Sinner kept his dream of finishing 2025 as world No. 1 alive on Thursday night, defeating Francisco Cerúndolo 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to reach his first-ever quarter-final at the Rolex Paris Masters. The victory, sealed in just under two hours, sets up a blockbuster clash with American left-hander Ben Shelton, a rematch of their riveting five-set duel at this year’s US Open.
Sinner, currently ranked No. 2, entered Paris balancing ambition with concern over a lingering hip issue that forced an early autumn break. “I’m clearly not at 100 percent, but these are the weeks you push,” he admitted after his opening-round win over Zizou Bergs. Statistics suggest the Italian’s serve-plus-return balance remains historic: he leads the ATP Tour in both service games won (90.4 percent) and return games won (33.8 percent) this season, a combination no player has ever achieved over a full year.
The Paris indoor courts traditionally reward first-strike tennis, a style that suits Sinner’s explosive timing off both wings. Against Cerúndolo he struck 37 winners, repeatedly stretching the Argentine wide with trademark inside-out forehands before knifing backhands down the line. Yet flashes of discomfort appeared: several times he flexed his right leg between points, and his average second-serve speed dipped to 148 km/h, nearly 6 km/h below his season norm.
Ranking math now tilts in Sinner’s favour after Carlos Alcaraz’s surprise third-round exit. Should the South Tyrolean capture the Paris title and reach at least the semi-finals at the upcoming Nitto ATP Finals, he would overtake the Spaniard for the year-end No. 1 throne—an achievement he called “impossible” just a week ago.
Key to that quest is Friday’s encounter with Shelton, who owns the Tour’s fastest serve of 2025 at 243 km/h. Sinner leads their head-to-head 3-1, but the American stunned him in Shanghai last month. “I’ll have to neutralise the lefty serve and be aggressive on the first ball,” Sinner said in Italian, adding that the Bercy crowd’s energy “makes you forget the pain for two hours.”
Beyond rankings, the Italian’s Paris run has broader implications. With compatriots Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Musetti sidelined, Sinner has become the face of Italy’s Davis Cup hopes later this November. Fitness permitting, captain Filippo Volandri plans to anchor his lineup around the lanky redhead in Malaga.
For now, all eyes turn to Court Central. If Sinner can out-duel Shelton and navigate a possible semi-final against Alexander Zverev or Daniil Medvedev, he will stand one win away from his maiden Masters 1000 crown of the season—and, perhaps, from rewriting tennis history once more.
