James Madison University Makes History: Unbeaten Season Secures First-Ever New Year’s Six Bowl Berth
• Hot Trendy News
HARRISONBURG, Va. — James Madison University is ending 2025 on a wave of momentum that reaches from the gridiron to the research lab, cementing the Dukes as one of the most talked-about programs in college athletics and one of the fastest-rising public universities in the Mid-Atlantic.
The football frenzy
Head coach Bob Chesney’s squad has rewritten expectations in just two seasons at the Football Bowl Subdivision level. JMU captured its second straight Sun Belt championship on Dec. 5, punching an improbable ticket to the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff and earning national media praise as “college football’s most unlikely title contender”. Star quarterback Jordan McCloud and linebacker Jailin Walker both received ECAC major awards this week, while five Dukes made the All-ECAC team announced Thursday.
Behind the on-field success is a financial game plan drawing industry scrutiny. A new nationwide database of athletic funding revealed that JMU now relies more heavily on mandatory student fees to bankroll sports than any other university in America, pouring nearly $70 million from student pockets into athletics last fiscal year. Administrators argue the investment fuels enrollment growth, brand visibility and an economic bump for Harrisonburg on game days, but critics are urging the Board of Visitors to reconsider future fee hikes as the program’s television revenue climbs.
Academic and economic accolades
Athletics isn’t JMU’s only headline. In November, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities named James Madison an Innovation & Economic Prosperity (IEP) University, recognizing campus researchers for generating $81 million in external grants and partnering with Virginia companies to commercialize health-tech patents. The IEP designation follows a record freshman class and a jump to No. 6 among Southern regional public universities in the latest U.S. News rankings, underscoring President Jonathan Alger’s push to shed JMU’s “teaching-only” image.
Winter graduates and new facilities
While the football team prepares for a New Year’s Eve playoff quarterfinal in Arlington, more than 950 students will walk in Saturday’s winter commencement inside Atlantic Union Bank Center. The ceremony will christen the arena’s new $2.8 million videoboard system, paid in part by athletics surplus funds. Earlier this month the university also expanded its Young Children’s Program, converting Memorial Hall space into a STEM-focused preschool that doubles enrollment capacity for faculty and staff families.
What comes next
University officials plan to lobby Richmond lawmakers for an additional $25 million in 2026 state operating support, citing enrollment growth and the rising cost of competing at the highest level of college sports. Meanwhile, Sun Belt athletic directors meet in January to vote on revenue-sharing tweaks that could shift millions toward top-ranked programs—an outcome that would immediately benefit the Dukes and potentially ease their reliance on student fees.
For alumni and fans, the most immediate milestone is Dec. 31, when purple and gold jerseys flood AT&T Stadium in the program’s first-ever FBS playoff appearance. Win or lose, James Madison University has already secured something invaluable: the national spotlight.
