iOS 26.5 Update: 10 Hidden Features Apple Didn’t Mention

Apple has pushed the stable iOS 26.5 build to every iPhone from the iPhone 11 lineup onward, delivering a mix of headline-grabbing features and more than 50 critical security patches released on 11 May 2026. The star attraction is end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging. For the first time, texts sent between iPhone and Android handsets enjoy the same lock-icon privacy iMessage users have long taken for granted. Encryption is enabled automatically when both parties’ carriers support the newest RCS profile, and the toggle lives in Settings ▶ Messages. A vivid new Pride Luminance wallpaper joins the personalization gallery, bringing dynamic color refractions to both the Lock Screen and Home Screen. Travelers get smarter navigation, too: Apple Maps now surfaces “Suggested Places” based on recent searches and real-time local trends, streamlining last-minute dining or sightseeing decisions. In Europe, iOS 26.5 quietly unlocks key APIs so third-party earbuds, smartwatches and other wearables can mimic Apple-exclusive tricks such as proximity pairing, interactive iPhone notifications and Live Activities. The change satisfies Digital Markets Act rules and hints at a more open accessories ecosystem going forward. Apple has also smoothed platform switching. When moving chats to Android you can now choose whether to export every attachment, the past year, or just the last 30 days—shrinking migration times for users with media-heavy histories. Smaller touches include new achievement “awards” inside Apple Books and an optional Inuktitut keyboard layout. Security, however, is the biggest reason to update. Apple’s bulletin lists fixes across Accelerate, Kernel, WebKit, Wi-Fi, Shortcuts and dozens more components, closing flaws that could allow privilege escalation, denial-of-service or sensitive data exposure. No active exploits are confirmed, but the volume of patched CVEs makes prompt installation prudent. Early testers report the over-the-air download weighs roughly 1.2 GB on an iPhone 15 and installs in under 15 minutes. To upgrade, head to Settings ▶ General ▶ Software Update, tap “Download and Install,” and keep the handset on Wi-Fi and power until it reboots. With encrypted cross-platform texting, a splash of customization and a mountain of security fixes, iOS 26.5 may be a mid-cycle release, but it’s one that every eligible iPhone should grab today.
