Iga Swiatek underlined her title ambitions at the 2026 French Open by brushing aside compatriot Magda Linette 6-4 6-4 in the third round, stretching her Roland-Garros record to 29 wins in her last 30 matches and securing an eighth consecutive trip to the last-16.
Yet the four-time champion’s latest victory was quickly overshadowed by a stern call for improved player safety on the Parisian clay. Speaking after Friday’s win, Swiatek urged tournament organisers to relocate the advertising hoardings and rain-cover rollers positioned just behind the baselines, branding them “not safe for sure” following a spate of collisions this week, most notably the accident that forced Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez out of the doubles draw with knee cuts and bruising.
The world No 3’s comments echo complaints from Britain’s Katie Boulter and Belgian youngster Alexander Blockx, both of whom tripped on the same obstacles earlier in the tournament. “There are other ways for us to be visible,” Swiatek said, suggesting sponsor signage could be moved to the back wall or digital boards to protect players who defend several metres behind the baseline on clay.
With the debate over court layout intensifying, Swiatek now turns her focus to a blockbuster fourth-round clash against red-hot Marta Kostyuk, unbeaten in 15 matches on clay after titles in Rouen and Madrid. Kostyuk admitted that her mindset is “completely different” from her last meeting with the Pole in Cincinnati, adding extra intrigue to Sunday’s showdown.
Swiatek, meanwhile, looks increasingly at ease alongside new coach Francisco Roig. The pair have worked on adding kick serve variety and sharper net instincts—adjustments that paid dividends against Linette as the top seed won 78 % of points behind her first delivery and finished with 17 winners.
Should Swiatek navigate Kostyuk’s pace and court-craft, a potential quarter-final with Aryna Sabalenka or Coco Gauff looms, but the 25-year-old insists her priorities remain “one match at a time—and keeping every player healthy enough to compete for the trophy.”
