Hunter Biden Now Living Abroad—Court Filing Uncovers Shocking Move Amid Mounting Legal Woes
• Hot Trendy News
Embattled attorney-turned-businessman Hunter Biden is back in the headlines after a Washington, D.C., court filing revealed he is now “living abroad” and unable to cover millions in mounting legal bills. In the April 6 declaration, filed by the law firm Winston & Strawn, Biden’s counsel said the president’s son has relocated outside the United States and “cannot pay his current lawyers,” underscoring the severity of his ongoing financial and legal woes.
The filing does not name Biden’s new country of residence, but recent podcast appearances and social-media posts point to extended stays in Cape Town, South Africa, hometown of his wife Melissa Cohen Biden. Last November, the 56-year-old told local hosts he had “fallen madly in love with Cape Town” and planned to split time between the city and the United States—a plan that appears to have shifted toward a full-time move as creditors close in.
According to the same court documents, Biden faces roughly $17 million in unpaid legal fees tied to a string of criminal and civil cases, including his 2024 federal gun conviction and nine felony tax counts. Although his father, former President Joe Biden, issued a blanket pardon in the final hours of his administration, the younger Biden still owes private attorneys and consultants who shepherded him through those proceedings. The filing notes that he has been forced to hand-search personal emails for discovery materials because he “cannot afford” professional e-discovery support.
Biden’s exile comes as congressional Republicans renew inquiries into his overseas business dealings, signaling that subpoenas could follow him across borders. Legal analysts say any attempt to compel testimony would now require international service protocols and possible cooperation from South African authorities, potentially complicating—and delaying—ongoing investigations.
For now, the first son’s focus appears to be survival. Relatives spotted him over Easter weekend in California, suggesting he may still travel stateside despite his new base abroad. Yet without a clear revenue stream or a benefactor willing to shoulder his multimillion-dollar debt, Hunter Biden’s legal battles—and the political aftershocks for his family—are far from over.
